Best price anywhere
I searched all over the internet for an Alum block - and this one is the best price. Store this on a soap-saver and it will last you years and years. We've used ours for a couple of months and it still looks brand new. This truly tones down razor burn and keeps skin from that ruddiness of shaving.

Product Description

The alum block, an old staple in traditional barbershops, is an all-natural astringent that instantly closes razor nicks. Made from potassium alum, this block soothes and cools delightfully when rubbed over the entire face after a shave. Instead of taking shortcuts by depending on cheaper minerals and product from Asia, Osma Laboratories has decided to reduce their carbon footprint by only using the very best products found in France. High-quality alum block
Definitely better quality than what I can get at the international store up the street, this block doesn't have the big air pocket in the middle that you sometimes get with cheap alum blocks. That means that I should be able to use most of it, instead of discarding it when it gets so rough that it causes more irritation than it relieves. All that in mind, be aware that this is a pretty small block. The picture doesn't give you any reference, but it's maybe 2" tall. I guess I expected it to be about the size of a bar of soap, so it was a bit of a surprise. Not complaining, just want to get that information out there.

Rather Expensive, but High Quality and Effective
While this is a high quality product and while it works well, it is on the expensive side.Pros:* Works on Nicks and Cuts - This product works well on my face for the occasional (and sometimes not so occasional as when my toddler comes in and pokes me while I'm shaving) nicks and cuts and for soothing razor burn. I use a double-sided safety razor, but this would work equally well after shaving with any device. Small cuts cease bleeding rapidly after application and razor burn is soothed after gliding this block over the area.* Natural product - this is simply a block of alum. For those who wish to keep their cosmetic and toiletry products as natural as possible, this is the way to go. No manufactured chemicals here!* Unisex - A browse through some of the reviews of this and competing products leads me to believe that this is a product used mostly by wet-shaving men. Ladies: This will work just as well, just as soothingly, on any...

Customer Review

This product is terrific.
I ordered four ONE POUND bags of this product and was extremely impressed by the way it was packaged. Very tightly packaged with very thick plastic. None of it had spilled or leaked during shipping. Furthermore, the product worked great for my project (tanning some animal skins). The price was right too. Barry Farms does a terrific job. I will certainly continue to order this and other products of theirs in the future. This was my first order with them, and I certainly will recommend them to others.

Aluminating
Good 1lb of Alum, food grade. The arrival date was a bit disheartening, set for the earliest more than 30 days after ordering, however it arrived within 2 weeks. I am using this Alum to make wallpaper paste: just google "care2 wallpaper paste". I have since checked out the Barry Farms Website, they have many quality products (also available on Amazon). In fact, I have already ordered two more products from them for use in preserving and yoghurt making. Needless to say selecting this product illuminated the world of Barry Farms, with all the good quality they have to offer.

Exactly what I ordered!
I ordered this product in order to grow a new alum crystal instead of buying a much more expensive (and smaller) alum block or styptic pencil. Currently, I have 2 crystals growing and they are doing great! The powder dissolves easily and is surprisingly easy to work with! To give a size estimate, a pound of alum powder is slightly more than what fits in a pint size mason jar (in case you are comparing to alum blocks). The powder came in an airtight bag, so there wasn't any clumping inside as well!To grow an alum crystal:- Dissolve alum in hot water until it stops dissolving- Allow water to cool and alum to crystallize out to form seed crystals- Choose the largest seed and suspend in the rest of the solution- Wait a long time (months) while discarding of new seeds which form(You can Google it for a more detailed recipe, but this is the gist of it.)

Barber Alum by Tulumba
At $4.49 for an 80 gram block versus $20+ for a 75 gram block of Taylor of Old Bond Street or any of the other so called name brands, it's a no brainer. I don't care what brand you buy, it's all hydrated aluminium potassium sulfate... period. Charging or paying up to 5 times for exactly the same thing is shear madness. I'm an active member of one of the major on-line straight razor forums. It never ceases to amaze me how snobbish people get about names and prices. If your brush didn't cost $200 it can't possibly be any good, and you can't possibly get good lather from any soap or cream that costs less than $25 for a small cake or tube. This is alum folks, pure and simple. Taylor, Dovo, Osma, Art of Shaving, Trumper, et al... it's all just alum. If you want to pay stupid show off prices go ahead while I save my money.

Great Item
A real necessity for shaving if razor burn is a problem. It will also help with nicks and cuts. Run it under warm water and hold it over a nick to stop the bleeding and prevent infection. Run it under cold water and lightly rub it over your face to cool your face and ease the burn after a shave. I've heard it works as a deodorant and even an acne treatment as well, but haven't tried it. The current price is spectacular for this item compared to others alum bars I've seen. Order more than one at a time though, as shipping on just one is pretty steep.

old barbers remedy

Its all-natural antiseptic properties work as an astringent that instantly closes razor nicks from shaving. soothes and cools razor burn when rubbed over the entire face after a shave. Run it under cold water and lightly rub it over your face to soothe and cool razor burn after shaving. Alum was used by the Egyptians more than 4,000 years ago. This is the cheapest brand at Amazon.com, it is OK, there are not much differences between them.

Worth every penny
This was the first Alum Block that I've used for shaving. started shaving using a DE shaver about 2 months ago and went the first month without using an Alum Block. the difference between them is a complete 180 degree. the alum block stings a bit where you mistreated your face, but that's the beauty of it since it tells you where you need to be careful next time, and at the same time it heals any nips and cuts that occur by your mistake. the delivery with the plastic handle seems to be ideal for the modern shaver, unlike the block that could slip and crack. also the thing that i find convenient is that the plastic holder has a small hole at the bottom that allows any trapped water to be release and not form any unwanted gunk. 5 out of 5.

Compact performer
Not sure what else is out there but this alum block is compact, has a cap and performs as advertised. The cap allows for easy storage and travel. I've gone back to a double edged razor and use the RazoRock Alum Block for occasional nicks. Some folks use it as a deodorant. Regardless of how you use the RazoRock, it's a good little product.

Neat, portable alum delivery system
This is a bit neater to use and easier to store than a traditional alum block. Dries clear, stops weepers and bleeding, prevents breakouts. Nice modern delivery of an old-time solution.

Good deal, but product weight is misleading
The product is exactly what I was looking for and a pretty good deal, but the product weight section listed this as 1 pound rather than the actual 4 ounces it is. Looks like an administrative mistake on the details, but really needs to be corrected. I would have bought from another vendor had I know this was only 4 ounces, as I needed 1 pound.
