Best thermal compound on the market
Arctic Silver 5 is the best thermal compound on the market. There are other types that might be better for specific purposes (Arctic Céramique for example), but for cooling a CPU, this is the best. I've used it extensively for quite a few computer builds as well as a few 'special projects' like replacing the thermal compound on an Asus Formula X48 mother board's Northbridge and Southbridge heatsinks.The results are always a 4-10c drop in CPU temperatures under load. You will not notice a huge difference at idle. The real gains in heat dissipation come when the CPU is being pushed. Also, don't trust the board makers proprietary software to tell you what your temperatures are; download a good program like RealTemp 2.41 or Everest for free (use google to find them). Either will give you more accurate numbers than Asus PC Probe, or whatever software your board manufacturer supplies.There are some saying Arctic Silver 5 didn't lower their temperatures. That...

Review for VIO 1.5G Thermal Grease
This is the first time I have bought thermal grease, and because of that I can't really say how well it works compared to other greases out there. It does work though, I bought it so I could use it on a celeron 2.4ghz that I bought used on amazon. As the cpu was used I didn't really want to spend a lot for thermal grease, and this was the cheapest I could find. After cleaning the cpu and the heatsink and adding this grease, it brought the temperature from around 51c-54c idle to around 39c-41c idle, depending on how many background tasks it was doing. I currently have it overclocked to 3.0ghz and it stays at around 46c while idle. So it's worked pretty well.

This stuff works! My computer was freezing up because, ironically, it was running hot at the cpu. After applying the product, it dropped my cpu temp. 10-15 degrees C. Now it doesn't freeze up anymore.

What can you say about thermal grease?
I like this one due to the plunger applicator rather than a tube. Plus you don't get a large amount so don't pay a ton for this one versus a large tube many other places sell you. How often can you use this stuff anyway. There you go, works as advertised and is still enough to do several heat-sink installations without waste.

Works and Applies well
This applies cleanly unlike the paste that came with my heatsink, and worked well. My CPU temp is below my chipset temp which is all one can really ask for.Oh since it doesn't come with directions you will either need to know how to apply it or look up how to apply thermal grease. It is all over the web, but a fairly basic to do it is:Clean both surfaces as best as you can with something plastic, then to draw a line with the grease like with icing horizontally (well in general with the USB stuff pointing out back to the left, or if you want to be technical orient so that the notched corner is on your lower right). Just a single line from about 15% in to 85% from the edge (or valley) of the top. That won't give you the lowest temps but it should cover even intel quad cores fine, and give you decent temps. Your mileage ma vary of courese. See the web for more precise details.

A necessity if you're replacing your CPU
Arctic Silver 5 (or AS5) is the best thermal compound on the market IMHO. It's basically an essential if you're installing a new CPU. This kit is everything you need to clean your heat sink, prepare the surface of the heatsink and your CPU, and ensure that your chip functions at the coolest temps possible.If you apply the compound correctly, the result is always a 4-10c drop in CPU temperatures under load. You will not notice a huge difference at idle. The real gains in heat dissipation come when the CPU is being pushed. Also, don't trust the board maker's proprietary software to tell you what your temperatures are; download a good program like RealTemp 2.41 or Everest for free (use google to find them). Well worth the money
Background:I have an older computer than most of the reviewers here. It's a Dell XPS400 with a 3.2GHz Pentium-D dual-core processor. These CPUs were manufactured with the older 65ns fabs, which means they consume a lot of power and generate a lot of heat. It's showing it's age now, but it's still fast enough to run Windows 7 64-bit.The Problem:Lately, I've noticed that my computer was getting louder and louder. I would rationalize it because the weather is getting warmer and I was playing some CPU intensive games. Eventually, it got to the point where it sounded like a jet engine was keeping my girlfriend from sleeping. Being the cheapskate that I am, I would rather add better cooling than to simply buy a new computer system. Sort of overpriced kit
Arctic Silver 5 is one of THE names in thermal compound for mounting heatsinks.Not made clear in the description of this product, however, is that you're paying somewhat of a premium price for a tiny bottle of xylene cleaner (e.g., Goo Gone) and a tiny bottle of isopropyl alcohol. If you happen to have those items lying around in your cleaning arsenal, there's not much value added by this kit.It's certainly possible that if you don't have those items lying around and you don't actually have any other need of them, you might save a bit of money with this kit in that you might pay a bit more than the extra 5 or 6 bucks for a bottle of cleaner and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol. However, you'd end up with a much larger supply of those items for not a lot more money.In the end, the kit is just fine for what it is. I'm just slightly groused that the description made it seem like the added components are more exotic than they really are.

In a word, AWESOME
This stuff is like magic. I had been using Radio Shack's 'thermal compound' and when my core i7 was stressed, it could reach over 80deg. I just performed a stress test with the Arctic silver and my CPU barely cracked 50deg. I will be using Arctic Silver on all my PC building projects from now on!

Arctic Silver 5 - Classic Thermalgrease
These are indispensable when building your own computer, or to simply maintain your overheating components later on in life. Take the heatsink off, use some 91% iso alcohol to clean it off, and then apply the AS5 (not the curse word) on, and watch your temps drop a good 5% or so. This tube is probably enough to apply on at least 4~5 heatsinks
