Decent converter box, just don't pay a lot for it
This is a good converter box, setup is a breeze and the picture and sound quality is good for something that is basically free with the coupon or $10 and under if you prowl the internet long and hard enough. Like another reviewer stated, many people don't set these up right. First of all, rabbit ear antennas will not work unless it has a UHF loop. Most, if not all current DTV stations are on the UHF band. You need a proper antenna for these devices to work properly, a fact that is not readily mentioned. If you have an older UHF bowtie or set top antenna your set! If you can, by all means use an outdoor antenna, the difference is incredible as compared to an indoor antenna. Another misconception is that DTV is HDTV. IT IS NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The output of this and any other SDTV DTV box is standard definition. Decent Converter Box
I thought this converter box was fine. It worked out of the box great. I think a lot of converter boxes, this one included, are getting bad reviews because a lot of people are not installing them correctly. You still have to have your rabbit ears plugged into your converter box for it to work correctly. Also, make sure you are on channel 3 if using the RF input options or if using the A/V Jacks tune your TV to the AUX. The positives of having this and any other converter box is that you are going to get more channels. In my area my mom now has about 5 more channels because she is using this. Most of the additions are from the local PBS adding a weather, traffic, classical, and jazz channels. But a few others were added as well. This converter box makes every channel come in perfect, when my mom used just her rabbit ears she always had to get up and tune her antenna, not anymore! Very Nice. You can record different stations while away from home. Works great with a VCR
I only have an outdoor TV antenna. No cable or satellite. I too bought this converter for the built in timer. You can record different channels at different times while you're away from home with your VCR and TV antenna (However, you can not record one station and watch another station "at the same time"). You have to set your TV and VCR to channel 3 (always) and the timer in this converter is what you set for the time and channel to record. Make sure the clock time on the converter box matches the clock time on your VCR. Or you may miss part of your show. There is one problem that I haven't figured out yet. I hooked this converter to the TV in my living room. My outdoor antenna cable line continues on and goes to the bedroom and the TV in the bedroom only plays the channel that the converter box is on in the living room. I have 2 of these converter boxes and so I hooked the second one up in the bedroom. It receives no channel signals. Well, that didn't last long since I...

Pretty good, but not outstanding
I've been playing around with three DTV converter boxes over the past three months (, , and this Zinwell), and none of them stands out above the rest. They all do about the same thing, providing excellent picture quality over their analog equivalents, and I can get 27/28 channels with a rooftop antenna in the Baltimore-Washington area. Provides DVD quality picture
At first the converter did not get many stations and I saw some frozen images - but I noticed the message that the signal was weak. I called Access HD to complain. It turns out the FCC's own data shows at least 30% of TV owners will need a new antenna to get a good picture. Access HD identified the correct antenna using a zip code look-up plus a verification using Google Earth (look at surrounding trees and buildings). It was awesome. Got the new antenna and I get more stations than I have ever received before - with DVD quality picture. I am sure most of the complaints you hear about converters of all brands are not converter problems at all, but antenna problems! The before and after performance with a good antenna is amazing. I purchased this using one of the government coupons to upgrade one of my TV's that does not have a digital tuner built in. The short of it is that it does work; just not as good as I had hoped. The positive is that the picture using the RCA outputs is good. Almost as good as a decent DVD player. It has an onscreen guide that will show you what is currently on a selected channel as well as what is on for the next few hours. The set up was easy using the onscreen guide and it found all the channels my other digital TV with the built in tuner found. Now the bad. For some reason it has this kind of high-pitched buzz on every channel. It increases with the volume. It is there with both outputs and is incredibly annoying. It does get hot as noted in other reviews but not so hot as to pose a threat or hazard. The remote is terrible and is not always responsive and the unit takes a minute to boot up. A solid option for suburban digital viewing
Because of costs and the fact that we don't watch much TV, our family recently decided to jettison satellite and go back to the venerable over-the-air broadcasts. I have a standard definition TV, so in anticipation of the change to DTV, I purchased this antenna alongside a digital converter box. I decided to take a chance on this little unit because it was the least expensive out there, figuring it was worth a risk before I started sinking more money. As it turns out, the RCA antenna works great -- we have about 11 digital channels in our area and this device brings in all of them, even with the antennas fully retracted. What's more, the picture is fantastic (satellite-quality) and our digital tuner reports that the signal strength is quite strong. I had to do very little manual adjusting to make it work. I'm a first timer at getting OTA HDTV. This has been an experiment in progress for the past 5 weeks. I have gone through four antennas (they are all here as I write this) before finding something that's satisfactory (rather than tolerable). I live around 25 miles from Manhattan, where the towers of most TV stations are located. I am also aware of the directional information from [...], and have experimented accordingly with its effects on reception. My apartment's windows all face north, while the signals all comes from southwest. I cannot get signals from where it comes from, and thus needed to get signals from deflections perhaps off nearby buildings and trees. It's a very poor circumstance for over-the-air reception, maybe just slightly better than being underground. Signals are weak, and are affected by weather. OEM version of Zenith DTT901 and Insignia brand converters Great
LG makes these converter boxes and sells them as either a Zenith DTT901 or a Insignia brand (at BestBuy). After much research at AVSForum re selection, here is a quick summary of my own experiences. Out of the half dozen or so READILY available boxes, this one is by far the best. Some other ones are prone to: locking up requiring a reset, sound problems, running very hot, may be impossible to add channels manually, and have difficulties setting the aspect ratio such that the program fills the screen best. These LG/Zenith/Insignia boxes have none of those problems, but make sure that you get one built after April '08 (there is a sticker on the side of the box with either ie "built May 2008" or something like 05A08). Setup is easy, sensitivity is great. With a set of rabbit ears I get stations from 70-90 miles away (see TVFool website for antenna directions and maps for your own area). I've not encountered any product recently that works so simply and easily as this does. It's a cinch to set up; for more complicated systems which also include DVD/VCR and stereo system, the people manning the 800 number are extremely helpful and patient. I needed their help -- and we had it all done in under 10 minutes. I'm truly amazed by the high quality of the picture on my 27" Sharp with only simple rabbit ears plus this box. I read most customer reviews of this and the others offered by BestBuy, CircuitCity and Target -- this was the clear winner based on these. Now that I have it hooked up, it's the clear winner for me. I own 6 DTV converter boxes consisting of mix of this Zenith DTT901, the Zenith DTT900, and the Insignia (Best Buy) version of the Zenith DTT900. Rare: Better Indoor TV Antenna!
I am part of a small group of friends who are gadget enthusiasts. One of us was a cable TV technician for 20 years, before that a TV repairman who installed tower TV antenna systems. We find that the best indoor antennas tend to be inexpensive, about $14 tops. There are a lot of makers and retailers of "Amazing digital" indoor antennas that prove to be garbage and cost up to $130. We have tested dozens and in the end end up still recommending $4 RCA units sold by stores like Family Dollar and Dollar General. My favorite has been a no brand flat antenna made in China, sold by Big Lots for $14. With I pick up 9 to 11 digital & HD channels. Every $30 plus unit I've found recommended by buyer comments, I've ended up returning as the Big Lots unit did better. Then, I ordered the Leaf. I did expect some improvement given the many very high buyer ratings. I was also thinking I may still end up returning it. 1st, I was sceptical. As one buyer here put it "it didn't... Perfect - Simple, Effective, Great Service
We ditched our cable last year for OTA signals and already had two antennas (purchased at the Blue and Yellow store) when I ordered the Mohu Leaf. The shipping was incredibly fast, the package was very simple, and the product installed in 5 seconds. Instantly, we went from receiving 15 channels with our previous antenna to receiving 23 channels with the Mohu Leaf. I'm glad I took the risk and tried it out...now my wife can be happy we get ABC again :) Honestly, if you're looking for an antenna, this is the one to go with. It's more affordable than the ones at big retailers and it outperforms them. What else can you ask for? Oh yeah, the customer service is great. I personally spoke with the President of the company when I called to ask about the product before ordering. Raised Lazarus from the dead!
I live in the middle of nowhere. About 70 miles either way to the nearest broadcast antenna and between two mountains. Getting any over-the-air stations with an outdoor antenna is challenge enough, let alone an indoor antenna. I was frustrated that my satellite company didn't carry those cool new sub-channels some of the stations now have, like Antenna TV, so, short of climbing on my dangerous roof to give an antenna a whirl only to be probably disappointed, I tried about 5 different amplified indoor antennas that all raved how great they were. Not a single station. Zero. Zip. I had lost all hope that signals even existed in my remote valley. Websites like "antenna web" agreed. "No signals available in my area." That is until I read the reviews about the Mohu. It seemed too good to be true, but I am an electronics geek and like experimenting. The device has a plastic case, with very small cooling holes on top. Auto channel scanning is fast. You can also manually scan individual channels.
If you have a non-directional antenna like rabbit ears this may be a good converter for you since overall it did seem to perform well with the brief use that I made of it. If you have a directional antenna like me you will probably want some other... All problems mentioned by the other reviewers are identical to what I have experienced on my two Apex Model DT250A…If it is the same recycled unit as the old Apex, Model DT250A, it is no wonder why it is so bad. I purchased the Tivax STB-T12 based on good reviews of the t9 and t8 and the documentation on the T12 at the Tivax website. I spent several hours trying to do the “add scan” and to manually add channels as described in the FAQ on the Tivax website.
