Brite-View OTA HD DVR
Probably like several other users, I heavily rely on digital OTA channels and netflix to feed my TV in the daily life. I found brite-view DVR might be a choice since it supports EPG schedule recording and usb port for increasing recording capability.First, I have only used it for few days so I wasn't able to test out all of the features but I did get to test out the basic ones. Here are some thoughts:1) the size, weight and built quality is decent enough.2) user manual is not that useful and you probably need to download newer version on their website.3) after finish initial setup, you have to press "menu" button on the remote to scan TV channels.4) remote control is not really responsive.5) it takes between 5-10 secs to load EPG and you can view detailed program description from EPG.6) video quality is good. (I am using RCA ANT1650 with BV-980H)7) takes too many steps to play my recordings...

Product Description

The HD-PVR from Hauppauge is the world's first High-Definition video recorder for making real-time H.264 compressed recordings at resolutions up to 1080i. HD-PVR records component video from cable TV and satellite set top boxes, with a built-in IR blaster to automatically change TV channels for scheduled recordings. Audio is recorded using AAC or Dolby Digital. The recording format is AVCHD, which can be used to burn Blu-ray DVD disks. Two hours of HD recordings, recorded at 5 Mbist/sec, can be burnt onto a standard 4.7 GB DVD-R or DVD-RW disk for playback on a Blu-ray DVD player. The HD PVR's amazing recording quality allows personal archival recordings of your favorite high definition TV programs from any component video HD set top box. The HD PVR also has standard definition composite and S-Video inputs so you can record your old home video tapes into an AVHCD format for creating Blu-ray recordings. Other features include recording high definition video at up to 1080i resolution, 720P or VGA/D1. Includes HD software video player so you can playback recordings to your PC screen. NTSC, PAL, and SECAm support. IWorks with Windows XP and Vista. It does not have an Australian power supply. Top to learn more

Great for recording video game consoles
To start off, I'm writing this review solely from the perspective of someone using this to record footage from video game consoles (an Xbox 360, in my case), because that's why I bought it and that's all I've used it for so far.Upon opening the box, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there was a component cable included, a nice bonus. The first thing you'll notice is how light the device itself is. The all-plastic body and the lack of weight contribute to give it a slight cheap feeling, but this is not reflective of the overall quality of the device, as I'm about to explain. The HD PVR has pass-through outputs, which means you can plug your console into the PVR and then the PVR into your TV (with the included component cable), eliminating the need to split the signal. I was a little bit worried about any input lag caused by the pass-through, but I was thankful to discover that there is absolutely none. The one downside of this, if any, is that the PVR...

Best Hi def recorder on the market currently
June postingok I would have given this 5 stars but this comes with current problem with it, this has optical in for 5.1DD recording at this time hauppuage can not get this to work so you are stuck with PCM 2.0 or audio from the analog imputs, now to the rest, it records video at 1920x1080 at same or near Blu ray discs, you have a choice of bitrate constant from 1 to 13.5 Kb or on variable all the way up to 20.2, this records in the same codeec (AVCHD) as blu ray and HD DVD discs, it will take any component imput, I have mine through my receiver where my Dishnet PVR HD, PS3, HD DVD and Oppo DVD player runs through, just for test purposes I tried all my devices and what I test recorded from dishnet, blu ray, DVD and HD DVD the test disc looked no different than the original source, once you capture your source you can then edit or add chapters then you get to add a real cheapo menu and then put in what disc you need to burn either a DVD-R or a dual layer DVD Disc, it takes...

So Far, So Good
Well, it's only been a couple of days that I have had this up and running. I am still learning some of its idiosyncrasies, but so far it's working fine for me. I got this box to replace my Dish HD DVR which was becoming too expensive for what I was watching on it. I am tending to spend more time watching Netflix streaming on my Roku player instead, so I thought I would save the $60 per month I was paying to Dish for stuff I hardly ever watch. This seems to fit the ticket nicely. It does the dual recording that I am used to and I can still watch either a pre-recorded event or watch live using my TV's tuner (but then I am stuck with watching commercials if I do that). So far I have not seen the lockups that others have mentioned, but then again it has only been a couple of days. The one time that I had issues was trying to see what the built-in Vudu was all about. It went into some endless loop of trying to connect to Vudu because my firewall was blocking it. After I opened up ports...

Great with Media Center...
This is my second tuner and far exceeds the 'average' tuner I purchased at a local electronics store. Hauppauge provided excellent customer service helping me decide which tuner was best for my computer and my needs. I have a new HP system running Vista 64-bit and wanted a tuner to run with the Media Center already installed. It did not come with a TV tuner. The HVR-1950 model 1192 comes with an external MPEG-2 encoder which doesn't draw resources from the computer. Great for watching TV while working in other programs simultaniously. It also comes with it's own viewing program (WinTV V6) which I find relatively user friendly but I prefer to use Media Center for TV viewiewing, recording, and scheduling. The USB connection makes installation easy. Setup in Media Center was simple and picture quality and sound is as good as fatory installed Hauppauge tuners. The package also comes with an FM radio antenna, remote control, and IR Blaster to control channel changing on cable or...

AMAZING!!!!
This product exceeded my expectations with quality and functions. Not only is it a clear picture the remote supplied works flawlessly with Media Center (Vista). Your able to record tv, play movies, it even pulls up all the information up for a movie that you recorded on tv. If your going to purchase any tv tuner this is the one. With built in radio that you can record off of too. But you need to use Vista in order to use all the functions.Good luck

Watch Analog, Cable and Digital TV on your PC
The WinTV HVR-1950 Tuner/Video Recorder lets you watch NTSC analog cable, over the air TV, ATSC digital over the air HDTV, and Clear QAM Digital Cable TV directly on your computer, either in a window or on full screen. Why miss your favorite sitcom or the deciding playoff game just because you have work to do?

This unique tuner supports NTSC analog cable, over the air TV, ATSC Digital over the air HDTV, and Clear QAM digital cable TV. NTSC is the analog cable TV standard, and ATSC is the over-the-air digital HDTV standard for North America and typically requires an antenna for reception. Clear QAM digital cable allows you to watch unencrypted HDTV stations from your cable TV provider without a set-top box.

The tuner also features a built-in 125 channel cable-ready TV tuner, allowing you to watch Analog TV and Clear QAM Digital TV by connecting to your cable box. For analog cable TV reception, you need an analog cable TV connection. If you have a digital cable set-top box or a satellite box, the WinTV-HVR-1950 can connect via either Composite or S-Video inputs. For ATSC over-the-air digital TV reception, a high-gain antenna is recommended. (To check the ATSC TV broadcasts in your area, go to TitanTV.com and enter your postal code. Note: depending on the strength of your antenna, you might not be able to receive all broadcasts listed at TitanTV.)

Schedule and Record your Favorite Show
With the on-board MPEG-2 encoder, which allows your PC to run at full speed while recording, the WinTV-HVR-1950 lets you record analog cable TV while allowing your PC to operate at full speed while recording, so you won't sacrifice any performance.

Digital TV programs are recorded in their original video quality, so 1080i programs are recorded at 1080i, and so on. With WinTV-Scheduler software installed, you can also turn your PC into a virtual PVR and schedule and record your TV shows automatically.

Analog TV recordings typically consume 1.5 GB of disk space per hour using Hauppauge's SoftPVR for Windows XP and Media Center. High-definition TV recordings typically consume 5 GB of disk space per hour.

Other features include a Dolby-TV stereo decoder for Dolby-quality audio, and a remote control that lets you control satellite and TV set top boxes for the ultimate in convenience. The WinTV-HVR-1950 is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Media Center.

What's in the Box

Great product, bad users!
I've read a lot of the reviews on this product with the majority of them bad mouthing it. I really like this product and I'll tell you why, but before I do, I'll give you some information on myself: 20 y/o male, currently residing in Greenbelt, MD right on the border of D.C., somewhat tech savvy running Vista Ultimate-32bit and use plain old rabbit ears from an old (and I mean an OLD tv).Installion was a breeze, as easy as 1-2-3. You connect everything to HVR-1950, plug in your USB cable and vista does the majority of the work for you. The tuner comes with a driver/program cd that Vista will ask you to pop in after not being able to find the drivers online. At this point you can pop in the disk or go to the support site and download the latest version of the driver (which you should have done before hand anyway). Once its installed you can setup Media center or Wintv. I like media better so I can't say anything for Wintv because I haven't used it. Media center TV setup is...

Best Converter box so far..
This is the best digital to analog converter box available. I have tried the RCA model, the ZENITH model which is also the same as the insignia model and this one is the best. Why? As far as reception, they all worked the same for me. But when you hit the guide button, the other models show 1 or 2 shows ahead but the guide on the TR-40 converter shows a huge guide hours ahead. Its the same guide you would see on your cable or satellite receiver. Since this converter is made by Dishnetwork, I'm guessing they are using the satellite program guide, but it is worlds ahead of any other converter. The TR-40 is also very small , half the size of the other converters and does not get hot when left on 24hrs. Don't waste your time with the other converters, this is the one to buy. I used my goverment coupons on 2 of these and sent the RCA and Zenith models back ....

Excellent Converter - if you know a couple things
This is an excellent box with a better Channel Guide than almost all other converters. I got it yesterday and have worked on getting my ancient rabbit ears w/ UHF loop to work ever since. No luck. Tonight I bought a Radio Shack 15-1878 indoor amplified antenna 35$ just to see what it would do before I bought an outdoor UHF antenna and it works like a champ. Keep it in mind if yours doesn't work well enough.IMPORTANT: Move this converter box as far away from your antenna as possible if the antenna is indoors. My signal went from an unwatchable 63 with the antenna base sitting on top of the converter which was on the TV, to 88-90 with the antenna still on the TV and the converter three feet+ away on the counter. Second trick not in the manual, if you want to delete a channel from the ones it finds (maybe not your language, etc.), the DELETE button in the list is grayed out and you can't choose it. The trick is to highlight the channel and press SELECT. That puts a check in...

Digital TV - FREE
After doing a lot of research, I decided to wait for this converter before getting my coupons. I recommend it, but it does have its drawbacks. The Pros1) I'm getting 22 crystal clear channels now, compared to 3 clear and 7 fuzzy analog stations I was getting before.2) The Guide, presents you with a grid that you can page through to see whats on.3) The Search presents you with a chronological list of what's on, and can be filtered by spelling part of the name. And then you can SAVE your searches for future use. For example FOOTBALL can be saved and reused every Saturday.4) The Browse feature, is great when you are watching something, but would really like to see what else is on, or what's going to be on next. This lets you explore other channels and other time slots, while not missing the dialog of the current show. I use this feature when I want to explore during commercials and don't want to miss out when the show...

Wonderful network tuner with some limitations.
OK, let's get the cons out of the way first: This box does not have a slot for CableCards, which means that you are not going to use it to record anything except either OTA digital TV (from an antenna) or the major networks on clear QAM from your cable. That's just the way it is, that's what this box was designed to do, and that cannot be changed. It will not pick up analog or encrypted-digital cable channels. It does not interact with your television at all, unless you are using your TV as a computer monitor. This is NOT the way to convert your old TV to receive digital TV.So what good is it? You can use it to pick up digital TV from an antenna or unencrypted QAM (usually network) cable signals, and stream to your computer for watching or recording.I have two of these on my local network. I use them to stream Fox, NBC, ABC, and CBS to my MythTV box, where I record everything broadcast by the Big 4 in primetime onto 2 750GB disks, which hold about 2 weeks of...

After 4 Years of Reliable Use Comes a Cheaper Replacement
[Update: Silicon Dust has shipped the as a replacement for this product. I've purchased a copy for testing, and it is nice, replacing my original HDHomerun seamlessly in my antenna system. Signal quality on the newer device seems more consistent with fewer dropouts of marginal channels. As it is cheaper, somewhat more energy efficient and smaller, the only reason not to buy the newer model is if you intend to devote 1 tuner to QAM cable, and the other tuner to an antenna, which would be impossible given the single coax port.]What I like about this product is the flexibility a networked device delivers. All the computers in my house can access it as needed: the Linux box running MythTV, the Vista PC running Media Center, the Mac running EyeTV. Even my iPhone can access the HDHomerun to check on antenna signal...

Fantastic device - the future of television?
This product is fantastic. After receiving the device I literally plugged it in to the cable TV, network and power, installed the EyeTV 3.0 software on my iMac and BAM!! It was working. Beautiful high definition television TV right on my Mac desktop. I cannot fault the device. Yes it is ugly but you can put in a cupboard on on a shelf and never have to look at it again. I really don't understand why Amazon doesn't stock the device. The only downsides that I have encountered are with the Electronic Program Guide for the EyeTV software which actually uses TitanTV. It took 24 hours for it to download the first program guide, and then I had to manually tweak all the stations.
