Still an awesome toy
If you're reading this, odds are you grew up playing with an Erector set and you're now considering one for your child. The good news is they're still just as cool as they were when you had one. The materials have actually been improved. The straight peices are now completely flat, rather than the beveled sides they used to ship in the old sets. They're made of a more rigid metal as well. This allows for a little more flexability in what your kids can design and build. At first I thought the price was a little steep, but my 8 year old has easily gotten $100 worth of enjoyment out of this set. I actually ended up buying another set to ship to a relative for his upcoming birthday, so yes, you're getting what you pay for.

Brings back memories
My son loves to build things. He has a huge Lego collection but I thought it was time to take it up a notch to a more intricate construction set. After researching a number of construction sets, I decided on the good 'ol Erector set. I had one as a boy and my dad had one when he was little. I'm glad I went with the Special Edition because it comes with detailed instructions to build about 15 or 17 different structures. Many other Erector set kits only have one design, such as a race car or train. I'm not saying they wouldn't add educational value but once it's built, it's built. The whole point is to find a toy which can be used over and over again. The Special Edition does just that. My 9-year old son loves it. In fact, my 7-year old daughter plays with it too and I'm happy about that. I think the eye-hand coordination, thought process to intrepret instructions, and the spatial thinking needed to understand how the parts go together benefits all who play with it. I'd like to see...

Build, Learn, Play
The Erector Set comes with a handy carrying case. Not only does it help your child organize the many small pieces of their set, it allows them to take the set with them on the go. The instructions are helpful and clear, showing in detail how to build the models, and stating clearly what pieces are needed before your child gets started. Please note, however, that there are no text directions, only illustrations. The plastic pieces can feel flimsy at times, but children testing the toy didn't seem to mind and played for hours.

A Classic Toy Lives On
Kids can build up to 15 different models using the illustrated instructions, or they branch out with their own creations. From planes to cranes to helicopters, there is so much that can be built with the 643 nuts, bolts, wheels, screws, and metal pieces that come with this set. A six-volt battery-powered motor makes the models come alive.

The sheer number of parts may seem overwhelming, but the compartmentalized case will help kids stay organized. Teenagers should have no problem building on their own, but younger kids might need some supervision and help, especially since the directions include no explanatory text -- just illustrations.

What's in the Box
Erector set with 643 parts, six-volt battery-operated motor (batteries not included), illustrated directions, and storage case.

I wish I was under 13
I bought this set for myself as a decoration for my dorm room. It took me about an hour to assemble the airplane on front, at a leisurely pace. The most frustrating part about assembling this are my fingers are sometimes too large to hold those tiny parts, and sometimes I can't wedge my finger in the set to hold the nuts in place.I would definitely recommend having a sibling, your child, or a friend available to help on some steps, as three hands are needed sometimes. As far as I can tell, the specialty pieces included in this set are (2x): C369, C371, B953, C375, and (1x) B684. All the other pieces I recognize from other sets. The instruction book can be found online here:www (dot) meccano (dot) com/models/10-model-set.html/Note that the instructions included with this set ONLY include the first four sets shown - the plane, a helicopter, a motorcycle, and an oil pump. The rest can be found from the website.Overall I...

fun for dad and son
My little man loves to do this with his dad. We didn't realize they could only do one at a time. Son was disappointed he had to take apart his first one to make another. Wish we had purchased a much larger kit.

Great Educational Gift for Creative Kids
I loved Erector Sets when I was a kid, so this was a great choice for my nine year-old nephew's Christmas present. In an age where video games are all the rage, he still enjoys building things, and the Erector set offers reasonable challenges with ease of use and a great outlet for creativity as well. If you're looking for a gift that engages your child to think and also enjoy the fun of a neat toy, then this set is for you.

Over all, it's a good toy
We purchased this erector set for our 7-year old son for Christmas. He began playing with it at once. He is mechanically minded so he was excited about the possibilities of things that he could create. The bolts and nuts are small and a little difficult to use, even for me. It may be a good idea for the manufacturer to include a set of tweezers. I had to help a great deal with construction; but, our son is very interactive in helping. This is an opportunity for together time and a teaching in working together. I like that most all of the construction pieces are metal. It makes the set more durable. Some of the plastic pieces are not in exact proportion with the metal pieces which makes construction more challenging. However, this opens up opportunity for alternative ideas of how to manipulate something to make it work (taking the lemons and making lemonade.)The directions included are pretty easy to follow. I had to go back and reconnect a part more than once after I realized that I...

Versatile but too dexterous
I bought this for my son's 10th birthday, product marked 8 and up, as he greatly enjoys this sort of toy. The parts are extremely well made and obvious care has been taking to ensure of the fit and finish as well as proper quantity of the parts in the box. It comes with all the tools that will be required for construction; no additional tools required. The educational value is virtually limitless. It is possible with some imagination, and maybe another set, to create structures both complex and simple. These are the positives. The negative (singular) is unfortunately the daunting level of dexterity required to make even one of the models outlined in the instructions. Even I found it challenging having to hold this nut while turning that screw and all the while trying to keep these parts in place. This is the reason I rated it only a three. My son despite his best efforts is unable to complete some of the steps without my assistance. Granted this is not many; however, for...

Difficult for young children
As an adult I found this to be frustrating no wonder my child was having problems with it. As you work on your masterpiece it becomes master pieces. Nothing stays together for long if you don't continue to check everything you have just accomplished. I don't know if it is the type of plastic or what but nothing stays where you put it. And each step has several things you have to do which makes it complicated for young children to follow directions. I would say this is at least for ages 8 and up. I want to buy the metal erector sets for my child and see if they are any better.

Very difficult for little hands
I ordered this for my eight-year-old son. He loves, and is very proficient with, the more complicated Lego and KNex sets, so I thought this would be another building toy option. I have no idea why this is labeled for children as young as 5. It is very difficult to follow the schematic diagrams, even for a child experienced with these types of directions. I had to help him build the objects, partly because when you got one set of nuts and bolts tightened, ones on the other side were becoming loose. The motor is a cool idea, but it really exacerbates the problem of loosening connections. Our robot literally ran itself apart within five minutes. I can tell this won't be a toy he returns to again and again. It's just too frustrating.

Fun with Daddy!
The kids have had a great time building things with their Daddy. At 6 and 7 this is our first "starter" erector set. So far so good.

very reusable
My 8 yr old got this for his birthday. He is lego crazy and likes to build. He loves this set and can do it by himself. He has a erector set for older kids as well. That set was a bit harder for him. He likes them both but needs help with the other set. Also on the other set he stripped some of the screws and bent some of the metal pieces just trying to get it together. So far with this set there has been no damage. We are on week 3 now and he has built about half of the models and isn't bored yet. He has also made some of his own creations. I'm looking at getting him more of the sets.

Not made as well as I'd like
I bought this for my son and my husband to do together (my son is only 3, but is very interested in taking his toy cars apart and putting them together again). You make different vehicles with this, and there is a motor so they can drive around. My guys built the stuff together and then my son tries to drive the vehicles around - they don't work very well. The wheels fall off easily, and not all the parts fit together very well. Also, the box that it came in was broken when I received it - there were 4 bolts holding the lid on, and one was missing so the seller had put on a zip-tie to hold it on. I ended up getting a plastic box to put the stuff in before wrapping it for my son's christmas present. I think even if all the bolts had been on, the lid would not have stayed on very well.Overall I think it's a good toy for someone who is very into building things, but the things you make with it are not that durable.

Erector Sets

We really don’t buy the kids a lot of gifts throughout the year- birthdays and Christmas are about it. For many years Thomas the Tank Engine ruled supreme, then Legos, Legos and more Legos. Erector sets are pretty highly regarded as well. iPods, came to mind and we thought it would be a brilliant idea to get each boy an iPod. I’ve read in the paper about school districts giddy about giving kids access to the internet on iPads on the school bus – to ‘do their homework’. The kids were easier to deal with, I nagged less, people weren’t anxious to get school done, the boys showed creativity in their work and play and the environment was generally more pleasant than some days we’ve recently had. I have to remind myself to stop and ponder what makes one day so much different from a previous day. ” I’m guessing, kids can be introduced to these things at 17 and be just as adept as younger children who have used gadgets for years already. The boys’ Lego stash is ridiculous, even worse than my yarn stash- much worse. Something one of the kids came up with 2 years ago when he was playing out in the trees- a cockleburr teddy bear. Maybe you’re thinking, well, just limit iPods to 30 minutes a day.

I think the Erector set you pointed to is possibly plastic, which just wont do. I loved my Meccano, so much so that I’ve still got a huge set. About Bill Quick I am a small-l libertarian with conservative leanings on most issues, except on many traditionally conservative social issues, where my stance would be regarded as hopelessly liberal by most social conservatives. I’m afraid it won’t do, and I am saddened that it has made Erector and Meccano into hard to find toys that have had to mostly switch from metal to plastic to compete. I tried to find a picture of this building, long since torn down, where ships were assembled from the keel up, but unfortunately I couldn’t find any that showed the sign. I had Meccano, the British equivalent of Erector.

Each part had an axel (or axels) inside the ball shaped parts with some gears to allow for movement when these ball shaped parts were connected together. Both sites are frequented by people willing to give things they no longer need to people that do. Explain why you need them, and I think people will get the word out. One of the balls had a motor inside and there were a set of wheels and a propellor (If I remember correctly). Also does the Autism society (since Aspergers is on the Autism spectrum) have a toy lending library.   From "squishy circuits" to robotics, to chemistry and metalurgy, but she has a keen interest in dinosaurs and Roman history, and I am a bit lost on Roman history. Or does your public library have a toy lending library. but my brother and I played with them and had a lot of fun, because you could build them in many different ways, and all the mechanisms were safely inside the parts. At freecycle, nothing can be sold-no money is to cross any hands at any part of the transaction.
