I don't who invented "grunge", but this is still great stuff
Green River ... just the band's name alone conjures up fond memories for those who were there and for those of us who wish we had been there.Except possibly for the (early) Melvins, Green River was the most inventive hybrid hard rock band on certainly the Seattle scene, if not on the national scene. These two recordings, especially taken together, are sopping wet with ominous, threatening, in-your-face aggression and doom and gloom. Rife with both filthy punk vitriol and over the top 70's heavy metal pomposity, both mini-albums assualt the listener mercilessly, from one second to the next, literally.Steeped in what sound like Hells' Angels-esque Black Sabbath and Motorhead tributory (and celebratory) riffs, and with enough pent-up and pumped-up blues angst to make John Lee Hooker's head spin, you might wonder what twisted, demented roadhouse these boys crawled out of. Great Intro To Seattle Scene
This CD captures the early days of the Seattle "grunge" scene, which to me was just a hybird of metal and punk, infused with a 70s rock ideal (see classic Van Halen or The Stooges). Needless to say, in the late 80s and early 90s, this was refreshing stuff. Green River features members of Muhdhoney and Pearl Jam, but the music definitely sounds more like what Mudhoney would later produce. If you're a fan of later Pearl Jam recordings, don't purchase this on the grounds that PJ members were in it. But if you like sloppy, rocking, and heavy guitar rock, this is definitely for you.

If it weren't for Mudhoney, I would give this five stars. Grunge at its best. It sounds like it was recorded in a garage and that is the heart of this album.

One of rock's all-time classic albums
On their third album, Creedence Clearwater Revival finally got rid of the sometimes directionless five-minute jams that weighed down their first two records."Green River" is probably their tightest album, and their best as well. There is virtually no filler here - the singles are magnificent, and even the album tracks are great.It opens with the title track, a concise 2 1/2 minutes of tough, "swampy" backbeat and vivid imagery, highlighted by the pithy, intertwined guitar figures of John and Tom Fogerty, and John Fogerty's brief, melodic, less-is-more solo.Other highlights include the classic rockabilly of "Bad Moon Rising", the melancholy "Lodi", the sinister, soulful blues "Tombstone Shadow", and the slow, mournful "Wrote A Song For Everyone".But everything is good, really, including the brisk, semi-acoustic country-rocker "Cross-Tie Walker" and the album's only cover song, an energetic rendition of "The Night Time Is The Right Time"...

The Great American Band's first completely original effort
With Concord Music Group having purchased the Fantasy catalog, the fortieth anniversary of Creedence Clearwater Revival's debut LP provides a suitable opportunity for a fresh round of reissues. All six of the original foursome's albums (from 1968's Creedence Clearwater Revival through 1970's Pendulum) have been struck from new digital masters and augmented by previously unreleased tracks. Those who purchased the 2001 box set can pick up most of the bonus tracks separately as digital downloads (the two longest bonuses are CD-only). Those who didn't buy the box, and think they'll buy all six reissues may want to consider the box set for its inclusion of pre-Creedence work from the Blue Velvets and Golliwogs, the seventh CCR album Mardi Gras, the 1970-71 live recordings and several box-only bonuses. But for those just wanting to pick up a few favorite albums, these reissues are the ticket. Each is presented in a digipack with original front and back cover album art and a 16-page booklet...

Green River
Green River has always been a album that brings back fond memories for me. I first bought it on 8 track in 69 when it came out and it had "Bad Moon Rising", on the tape twice. I still remember the first time that I heard "Bad Moon Rising". I just stopped what I was doing and listened to the song. Not many songs have gotten my attention that way. Those were definitely turbulant times and this album helped lighten the mood. For those of you who were there and to those who weren't, I would highly recommend this album as one of CCR's best.

Remarkably, this is the third studio album Creedence Clearwater Revival released in 1969! During that stunning burst, John Fogerty could do no wrong. Green River isn't as chock-full of CCR standards as the record that followed it in 1970 (Cosmo's Factory), and, at 30 minutes, it's briefer than its rather brief predecessor (Willy and the Poorboys). Still, this is economy at its best. The title track, "Lodi," and "Bad Moon Rising" are all indelibly etched into the memory banks of classic-rock fans, while "Commotion" and "Cross-Tie Walker" are perfect swamp-rock complements. "The Night Time Is the Right Time" is one more in a series of spot-on Fogerty covers. Green River is the birth of Grunge
I really like this album. Its short but to the point. It shows that they can really make good music. Come on Down and Swallow My Pride are the best one the album. Corner of My Eye and Tunnel of Love are also awesome. Anyway, definetly pick this up it'll let you know where grunge started and how it first sounded.

Very Interesting
Green River's COME ON DOWN is one of those albums that you own to satisfy curiosity more than to listen to. There are at least two grunge classics on this album ("Come On Down" and "Swallow My Pride"), and some filler stuff too. Mostly you wouldn't imagine these guys going on to form Pearl Jam, but it is very believable that Mark Arm and Steve Turner stepped up to Mudhoney from here. If you like Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, just be warned that this sounds NOTHING like what they've gone on to do since. If you like Mudhoney, this is sort of like the Young Mudhoneys.

the seminal grunge band
i think this is a great ep from the original grunge band. its raw but thats part of the attraction. i agree that come on down and swallow my pride are the best tracks on the disk. this is a good album for anyone who enjoys grunge/punk/alternative. you also will enjoy it if you are a fan of mudhoney, soundgarden or early nirvana. a great addition to your 80's/90's rock collection

Remarkably sensitive, very well-written
Ann Rule waited 20 years to write this book, until the GRK was caught, and it was well worth the wait. The first half of the book is devoted to the victims: desperate women, many of them drug addicts and/or emotionally fragile, most of them uneducated and living on the fringes of society. She draws sensitive, compelling portraits of these young women, too many of them still in their teens, living a hard existance. They had families, children in some cases, and friends who loved and cared for them. They weren't just faceless nobodies, walking the streets, not caring about themselves and their families. Many of them wanted to escape the life they were living, but could see no way out. These poor, victimized women are worthy of the reader's attention not just as some kind of object lesson, but as human beings engaged in a very real tragic struggle.The victims also offer some insight into the nature of their killer: a marginalized, banal little man who got his kicks...

Emphasis on Victims
As a person who has read all of Ann's books, I didn't find this one of her best. Satisfaction in this book is largely dependent on what draws a reader to true crime. I for one am interested in the killers and what makes them tick. This book gave a tremendous amount of attention to the victims and their background stories. I mean no disrespect to the victims, and I certainly empathize with them and their families, it's just that the detailed aspects of the victim's lives felt over-done for my taste. I realize that Ann was trying not to glamorize Ridgeway at the expense of his victims, however I feel she went a little overboard. Ann is a true crime writer not a victims right's advocate. She should therefore write her books accordingly.On the other hand the second part of her book that focused more on Ridgeway, the people in his life and the investigation of the killings was excellent. The latter half of the book was more in keeping with the Ann Rule style I have come to know...
