Jack Daniels - Maniac Magnet
What a lollapalooza of a great finish to Konrath's Jack Daniels series and to Crouch/Konrath's serial killer extrava-goreathon that I've been following for so many years!Jack Daniels galumphs along, ponderous and pregnant, worrying about bringing a new life into her world (and well she should at 48 years old - YIKES), trying to make life changing decisions with her baby daddy, Phin - and then serial killer extraordinaire Luther Kite comes back into her life. And he's not alone - we get to catch up with some of our other killers du jour too, including my favorite, Lucy. Also tagging along are other favorites including McGlade, who you don't want to be stuck on a stakeout with or have choosing your baby's name.Deeper in the book, STIRRED feels like a noir nightmare, with Jack and gang in incredibly creepy surroundings with shades of Dante's Inferno thrown in. And there was a plot twist that caught me totally unexpectedly - not easily done.I...

A Grand Finale!
I see there are already 20-something reviews up for Stirred, probably all well-written and thought-provoking, so let me just say this:I mothereffing loved this book. The hyperlinks were a great touch. Revisiting the characters and story lines (from previous books) by clicking the links made it interesting. I laughed out loud a few times, cringed a few times, and overall had a ball. I think because I knew it was going to be the end of the Jack Daniel series & the end of Crouch's Desert Places books, the reading was kind of bittersweet, but you'll have that when you love certain characters.FWIW, about 17% into the Kindle version there's a scene with Phin & Jack that leads into Jack & Harry and OMG, I had to reread it a couple of times. I'm stealing some of that dialogue for the next time I feel the need to insult somebody. It was hilarious! Oh, and if I ever find a Harry McGlade t-shirt, I'm buying it.Great book, 5 stars all the way.

Product Description

Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels has seen humanity at its most depraved and terrifying. She's lost loved ones. Come close to death countless times. But she always manages to triumph over evil. Luther Kite is humanity at its most depraved and terrifying. He's committed unthinkable acts. Taken human life for the sheer pleasure of it. He is a monster among monsters, and no one has ever caught him. Each is the best at what they do. Peerless. Unmatched.

Until now...

In Luther's experience, people are weak. Even the strong and fearless break too easily. He wants a challenge, and sets his depraved sights on Jack. But with a baby on the way, Jack is at her most vulnerable. She's always been a fighter, but she's never had so much to fight for. So he's built something especially for Jack. His own private ninth circle of hell--a nightmare world in a forgotten place from which no one has ever escaped.

It's J.A. Konrath's greatest heroine versus Blake Crouch's greatest villain in Stirred, the stunning conclusion to both Konrath's Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series and Crouch's Andrew Z. Thomas series.

Only one can survive. And it won't be who you think.

Interview: J.A. Konrath & Blake Crouch

Blake Crouch: So rumor has it this is the last Jack Daniels novel. [Jack also appears in Shot of Tequila, Shaken, Serial Killers Uncut, and Flee.]

J.A. Konrath: Rumor also has it this is the last Andrew Z. Thomas/Luther Kite novel. [They also appear in Desert Places, Locked Doors, Break You, and Serial Killers Uncut.]

BC: So...are the rumors true?

JAK: You tell me.

BC: Pretty much. Yes. Yes, they are 100 percent true.

JAK: Well, what if they offered us a lot of money to write another book?

BC: No way. We've discussed this. We're done. But just for the sake of argument--how much are we talking?

ARG!! Great toy!
My 3 and 8 year old boys love this treasure chest. It is heavy, very sturdy and well constructed. The skull latch pivotes to side to release lock, and it is easy enough for my 3-year-old to operate easily. Inside the chest is a slightly raised bottom with three planks of wood; the middle plank can be removed to access the secret compartment. The fabric flag and eye patch are substantial enough. The plastic coins are heavy, thick, well-made and deeply imprinted with a skull. The chest is large enough to hide other objects. I like to fill it with different things and have them go on a treasure hunt. Measure approx. 9.5" wide, 6.5" deep, 7.25" tall.

yo ho ho! super fun pirate toy!
My daughter (age 4.5) received this for Christmas after admiring it at her cousin's house for over a year and asking for it every time she saw it in stores. Since then she has played with it over and over again and totally loves it. Please don't let the other comment on this sway you, I don't know what that person is talking about. This is similar to other Melissa and Doug toys, which I think are very durable, quality, classic products. Your child will have a blast pretending to be a pirate, counting the "gold" and hiding secret treasures in the secret compartment at the bottom of the chest. You don't need a lot of bells and whistles to have very fun, imaginitive play. I highly recommend this over all the new Pirates of the Caribbean branded products which shouldn't even be marketed to children in the first place (hello, it's a grown-up movie!) - this product is much more appropriate for young children. Make yourself a newspaper hat and have some old fashioned fun with this...

great for treasures
My son is 11 years old and wanted the chest just to keep his own personal treasures. He loves it. It's smaller than i thought it would be but it's just right for what he uses it for.

KaBOOM!!!
This is a great resource book for pyromaniacs who want to expand their horizons. The highlight of this book is the chapter on the venerated potato cannon (a.k.a. spud gun). The author presents a simple yet effective design and gives detailed instructions on how to construct it. I have seen a number of designs on the web, and I prefer this for it parsimonious design. I have "launched" a number of spuds with this cannon, and am perfectly pleased with its operation.Other projects include back porch rocketry (the paper match rocket, the hydro pump rocket, and the pneumatic missile), the Cincinnati fire kite, the Greek fire and the catapult, the tennis ball mortar, the flinger, Pnewton's petard, the dry cleaning bag balloon, the carbide cannon, and the ballistic pendulum. The book is clearly written and illustrated (with drawings and black and white photographis). It contains a number of history vignettes along with some illustrations of ancient weapons. The remaining chapter...

Things that go "Boom" in the Night
What a wonderful boys book--boys from 9 to 90 will get a bang out of these projects. The author presents enough safety information to be reasonable, and mixes in scientific explanations, a bit of math, and interesting anectdotes that take us back into the history of ballistics. But most of all, he presents details plans and parts lists (including sources for hard to find parts) to build things that shoot up into the air, things that go "BOOM," and other cool stuff like fire kites. Many of the projects described here are also well documented on the internet. But most internet postings have little to say about safety, science, or history. Using this book as a starting point, and the internet as a resource to expand the ideas, could lead one to develop a truly interesting ballistic arsenal indeed!!Before we had homeland security to worry about, this might have been a good source book for a science fair. Now, it just might be a great way to spend a lifetime behind bars. But, if...

Product Description

Ordinary folks can construct 13 awesome ballistic devices in their garage or basement workshops using inexpensive household or hardware store materials and this step-by-step guide. Clear instructions, diagrams, and photographs show how to build projects ranging from the simple—a match-powered rocket—to the more complex—a scale-model, table-top catapult—to the offbeat—a tennis ball cannon. With a strong emphasis on safety, the book also gives tips on troubleshooting, explains the physics behind the projects, and profiles scientists and extraordinary experimenters such as Alfred Nobel, Robert Goddard, and Isaac Newton. This book will be indispensable for the legions of backyard toy-rocket launchers and fireworks fanatics who wish every day was the fourth of July.

Great Collection for Overgrown Boys
This book is a wonderful resource for those boys who have graduated from Nerf and waterguns- and for those of us that never will. What struck me most was the sheer variety of projects in this book- from little rockets powered by a match(!) to monster potato guns, this book has everything. I built a potato gun similar to the one in this book several years ago, and have been looking for projects in the same vein. With this book, I've found them. I especially love the fact that he uses a variety of power sources- the traditional hair spray of the potato gun, air pressure, even chemical combustion. One of the unique things about this book, as compared to other similar books, is the emphasis on both safety and history. Safety is important for obvious reasons. But most readers are enthusiasts about this sort of stuff, and the history lessons are exciting. My only complaint is that there is no room in this book for any sort of modification to the designs. For example, there are...

Stories that will expand your world.
If you're a teacher, if you care about education, if you come from a family of immigrants, if you care about how immigrants affect and change this country, you should read this book. You can also read it as a sort of travel book -- a journey through many countries across the globe, with a local guide who tells you about how people really live there.Libman teachers English as a Second Language at Truman College in Chicago, and in for this book he has interviewed a wide range of former students. This book is a collection of their stories, told in their own words, about where they came from, how they came to the U.S., and the struggles they faced along the way.I have recommended this book to people who work with immigrants, to teachers, and to people who have very little contact with immigrants and don't understand the challenges they face. Each person offers a brief, but vivid picture of his or her life. They may remind you of stories from your own family or...

Kites In Chicago

Not only did image of the kites captivate me, but also the kite flyers demonstrated strength and precision as they turned their kites one way, then another, then in circles or other shapes. Last year, adults and kids alike were watching in seeming disbelief at the way four or five kite flyers would work together and manipulate their kites into and back out of positions for a choreographed routine similar to dancers on a stage.

Amy and Connor will both be there on Saturday April 21, at Graf Park in Wheaton, to perform some of their amazing kite demonstrations, together with their friends from the Chicago Fire Kite Team. Chicago Fire and Connor Doran both fly a type of stunt kite known as a Revolution kite. Watch Amy and Connor Doran and the Chicago Fire Kite Team take to the air, on Saturday, April 21st at Wheaton’s Graf Park. Chicago Fire are best known for dual-line, team formation kites. Expect to see every kind of kite in the sky at Wheaton Park District’s Forth Annual “Go Fly a Kite. “Revolution kites,” Amy explains, “are four-line sport kites. The Cody kite was invented at the turn of the twentieth century by Samuel Cody who designed a box-kite with wings for extra lift. Chicago Fire is an amazing group. “Gift of Wings,” a specialty kite shop, will be on hand to sell kites while supplies last. “People are stopped in their tracks by the sight,” says Amy Doran four-time National Kite Flying Champion. “The first time he worked with a Cody kite, Connor literally blistered his hands keeping it in the air. After years of being bullied for differences created by his epilepsy, Connor’s peers suddenly saw him in a whole new way, when he showed what he could do with a few strings and a kite. “Flying kites starts as such a simple thing, but it becomes a way to connect. The Dorans often practice and compete by flying their kites indoors. At last year’s grand launch, over 800 kites took to the air at the same time, breaking a local record. But history isn’t Connor’s favorite part of kiting. Amy feels those lines of connection run to more than a mere kite.
