Digital converter boxes receive over-the-air digital TV broadcasts for viewing on TVs that do not have built-in digital tuners. If you wish to keep using your analog TV set, you must purchase a digital converter box. This box receives over-the-air digital TV broadcasts for viewing on a TV that does not have a built-in digital (ATSC) tuner. Additional features include EPG (Electronic Programming Guide), RCA output, antenna RF input (F-type connector), RF output, Closed Caption, and remote control. Top to learn more

Value-priced clear-QAM cable box
I just bought and installed two of these. The main claim to fame for this box is that it decodes clear QAM on cable in addition to off-air ATSC. Most Digital to Analog converter boxes are off-air ATSC only. pros: -demodulates clear QAM -picture quality is good -RF and baseband outputs -allows you to delete unwanted channels from the scan list cons: -poor remote control range, especially off-axis -user interface for deleting unwanted channels is painful to use -daylight savings feature doesn't work -audio level on RF output is undermodulated (volume is very low, so hum is a problem) -autoprogramming is very slow, about 20 minutes.

KWorld ATSC/QAM tuner (SA295-Q DE)
Pros: Video and sound quality is excellent. It has outputs for DVI/HDMI/Component video and standard video. After auto-tuning one can manually delete channels (feature not documented in the manual or online). Remote is very simple, but does what it was designed to do well. Firmware is upgradable via USB flash drive. It seems to be very energy efficient. It does not get very hot and also has an auto power off feature. All the expensive(HDMI/DVI) cables/connectors are included. Audio, component and AV cables are not included, but they are cheap enough to get yourself if needed. Cons: Manual and website could better describe all the products features. Cycling through the different output combinations can be a bit confusing, again just not documented clearly. One of my auto-scanned channels came up as a channel number/text combination and there is no way to select it to be deleted. Deleting channels is a pain...

Great OTA tuner
First off, I'd like to say that I finally decided to get rid of my cable TV subscription after all these years. Paying more than $1000 a year for cable just doesn't justify getting 500 channels (for a TV that costs $500!), which I hardly watch anyway! Comcast is the only cable company in my area so I'm stuck with a $100 a month subscription. That said, this tuner is worth more than the $100 I paid for. Also, with a better antenna (for about $50), you can get even more channels than you need. I was able to scan 25 channels and I live on the first floor in a busy, apartment complex in Northern VA! I've been using this tuner for 2 days now and it's working almost flawlessly (very few dropouts through DVI-D to HDMI connection) so I'm very, very happy with its performance. I will, however, say that the sound through HDMI has all sorts of dropouts (I suspect that it's the HDMI cable that is causing this problem, so I probably will buy a new and better cable later to try...

Serves My Purpose Well
I purchased the Kworld HDMI edition HD TV Tuner in order to get all of my local channels in 720p and 1080i. My LCD only had one cable/antenna input with a tuner but both extra HDMI and component inputs. My cable service only provides about half of the local stations available. The tuner is up and running now and providing excellent reception and HD pictures. I initially had trouble in that the tuner would freeze on a weak station and I would then have to reboot the tuner. A call to Kworld's US based tech support (949-450-0052) identified new firmware which they sent me via email as an attachment. It installed easily after I discovered the flash drive I was using was partitioned into 2 drives. Kworld requires that the firmware be downloaded on a clean flash drive in order to transfer the upgrade to the tuner in the configuration I was using (other options available depending on the equipment you are using). A clean flash drive without partitions solved that problem...

This is an analog tuner
Product works fine with a good antenna. Remember folks, this is *NOT* a digital tuner. It's analog, and this device will be useless in the USA come February 2009. It will, however, still be useful in Canada until 2011 and in Mexico until 2022. I bought this device because I will be giving this as a gift to a friend in Canada. The seller should add "analog" to the title or in the description as most people don't know what NTSC/PAL is and may hastily assume it to be a digital tuner.

Awesome item for the price!!!
I took a chance purchasing this item since it had no previous reviews (I am the first). I just got it today and must say I am a happy camper. I was going to wait to see how it functions over the next few weeks but I didn't want to leave this item review-less that long (that's how much I like it!). Anyway, I ordered the item because I have an older Samsung SyncMaster 172n (17" LCD monitor) collecting dust since I upgraded my computer monitor to a wide screen version. I wanted to make it a TV for our work out room and came across this little gem. I received the item very fast (2 days from hdtvonpc) and hooked it up right away. The item was packaged quite well (box is 11.5"x7.75"x2.75"). It doesn't come with an instruction manual persay, it comes with a diagram instead, but its easy to hook up anyway. I connected it to my monitor, cable hook up, and a pair of external speakers, (3 plugs for power total) and the picture came right on when I powered the device...

TV Box
Works great with my LCD monitor (both standalone and through my PC). Decent price! It is fairly light, and with the cable and speaker wires attached, it might be hard to keep it where you want it (That will happen with most TV boxes on the market from my experience), All in all, it works well and was no problem to set up. One thing to keep in mind when putting the battery in the remote is that the battery goes UNDER the + connector, not on top (found out the hard way <Grin>...)

Very Nice. You can record different stations while away from home. Works great with a VCR
I only have an outdoor TV antenna. No cable or satellite. I too bought this converter for the built in timer. You can record different channels at different times while you're away from home with your VCR and TV antenna (However, you can not record one station and watch another station "at the same time"). You have to set your TV and VCR to channel 3 (always) and the timer in this converter is what you set for the time and channel to record. Make sure the clock time on the converter box matches the clock time on your VCR. Or you may miss part of your show. There is one problem that I haven't figured out yet. I hooked this converter to the TV in my living room. My outdoor antenna cable line continues on and goes to the bedroom and the TV in the bedroom only plays the channel that the converter box is on in the living room. I have 2 of these converter boxes and so I hooked the second one up in the bedroom. It receives no channel signals. Well, that didn't last long since I...

comparison with dtvpal plus
I purchased the two major timer event schedulable/programmable converter boxes available as of this date: the Zinwell and the DTVPal Plus (enhanced version of the DTVPal or TR-40 CRA). These are some of the major problems and advantages of each. The biggest problem I have with the Zinwell is that the remote control is the flimsiest and cheapest control I have ever seen with any product. The down arrow button is already having problems responding to pressing after only a few days. It usually takes several years before buttons on a remote control begin to go bad, and I am concerned that this one will not even be working a year from now. The text labels on the buttons are rubbing off and becoming harder to read. The biggest problem with the DTVPal Plus is the reception. The Plus is supposed to have enhanced reception over the prior models which were famous for bad reception, but in my area it gets a couple less UHF channels than the Zinwell and often has severe...

Pretty good, but not outstanding
I've been playing around with three DTV converter boxes over the past three months (, , and this Zinwell), and none of them stands out above the rest. They all do about the same thing, providing excellent picture quality over their analog equivalents, and I can get 27/28 channels with a rooftop antenna in the Baltimore-Washington area. This Zinwell is the latest, and after about 2 months of testing it, here are my observations: Pros: - It has a power button and channel buttons on the front of the box in case you misplace the remote - It displays signal intensity/quality meters each time you change the...

Great tuner/ recorder
This is a great tuner/ video recorder. It is fully compatible with Vista and Windows Media Center. The remote control is convenience and works great with Windows Media Center. It virtually transforms your desktop/laptop into a HDTV plus a digital recorder system. Powerful hardware configuration (CPU, memory and hard disk) is strongly recommended. Recording 1 hour of HD contents (720p/1080i) in Windows Media Center requires 6 GB of hard disk space. The software package is good but I prefer Windows Media Center.

Play and Record Television Digitally
The WinTV-HVR-950Q is a simple-to-use device that brings over-the-air high definition ATSC digital TV as well as analog cable TV directly to your PC desktop or laptop. With the additional included antenna, it can also receive analog TV broadcasts, and it can also accept video feeds directly from a camera or satellite box.

More versatile than a DVR, the WinTV-HVR-950Q is a pocket-sized device that simply plugs into your PC's USB port. It features a built-in digital ATSC over-the-air TV receiver. If you live in one of the more than 200 cities in the United States that receives ATSC digital TV, you'll have immediate access to as many as 1500 digital TV stations. ATSC digital TV is the over-the-air HDTV standard for North America. ATSC broadcasts range in resolution from standard definition up to the high definition 1080i format. (To check the ATSC digital transmissions in your area, input your zip code at titantv.com.)

A portable digital TV antenna, which can be used to receive digital TV up to 10 miles from an ATSC transmitter, is included with the PVR . (To check the ATSC digital transmissions in your area, input your zip code at titantv.com) If you live in an area where you can't currently receive ATSC digital TV, the WinTV-HVR-950 can still be used to watch and record analog TV from cable TV or a TV antenna. (The WinTV-HVR-950 cannot receive digital cable TV or digital satellite TV.) With the included credit-card-sized remote control, navigating all these channels is easy.

Watch Clear QAM Digital TV
The WinTV-HVR-950Q also has a built-in QAM tuner, allowing you to watch and record QAM programming. Clear QAM digital TV channels are digital cable channels which can be watched on a TV set without a cable TV set top box. are Many cable operators transmit the local high definition ATSC channels using clear QAM.. Some cable operators transmit additional non-premium TV programs using clear QAM. With the WinTV-HVR-950Q, you can watch these channels for free. Clear QAM channels range from standard definition to the highest 1080i definition.

Once the WinTV-HVR-950Q is connected, you can begin to record your favorite shows in high-quality MPEG-2 directly to your hard disk using the Hauppauge SoftPVR MPEG-2 encoder. Television recordings will typically consume 5 GB of disk space per hour for ATSC high definition, while analog recordings will typically consume 1.5 GB of disk space per hour. You can also use the included WinTV-Scheduler to program your compute to record your favorite analog or digital TV shows for play back at any time.

Compatibility with Microsoft's Windows Media Center means that you can watch TV as well as your recordings with Windows Media Center. The included WinTV application also lets you watch your shows in a window or on full screen.

The WinTV application offers an elegant interface to watch TV in a window or full screen. View larger.
More about PVR Technology
PVR stands for PC Video Recorder. The WinTV-HVR-950 is a PVR that allows you to play television through your computer and record the broadcasts digitally. PVR doesn't use standard videocassettes; instead, it uses your computer's hard disk to store the broadcasts.

Once you record a television show to your PC's hard drive, you can burn a CD or DVD that will allow you to play the show back on another computer or on your television. With video editing software (not included with the WinTV-HVR-950), you can even edit the shows. This is a great feature if you want to save clips from movies or sitcoms, or keep your favorite player's grand slam or TD kick-off return for posterity.

And just like a typical VCR, the WinTV-HVR-950 offers you several recording options, depending on your play back needs. If you want the highest quality recording for playback through your HDTV, all you need is enough hard drive space to support high-quality recording. By using the lowest recording option, you can use your WinTV-HVR-950, along with an inexpensive video camera, as a low-cost on-site video surveillance system. In fact, the possibilities of how you can take advantage of the WinTV-HVR-950 are endless.

Hauppauge 1191 WinTV-HVR-950Q TV Tuner
The antenna and remote control are junk right out of the box. The end fell off the antenna and the remote control worked some of the time and then quit all together. That is the reason for the 4 star rating. On the up side the tuner stick and software work great. The unit also works great with Windows Vista Media Center. I have eliminated the TV set in my motor home and watch TV exclusively on my laptop. I can record programs or schedule programs to be recorded, then put my laptop to sleep. The computer will wake up and record the program. The best part is I can shrink the screen down to any size I want then set it for always on top and stick it up in the corner of the screen. I can surf the net or write a review while watching TV. As I am writing this review I have eight windows open and all is working fine. My laptop is a lower end Compaq ($500.00 range) with Windows Vista and 2 gig's of ram. If you open the box and throw the antenna and remote away you then have a 5 Star product...

Good hardware, bad software
Hardware When my cable provider (Comcast) announced a conversion of extended basic channels (24 to 71) to digital, I bought the Hauppauge HVR-950Q to replace my Hauppauge HVR-950, an analog only USB tuner. Picture quality with my old Hauppauge HVR-950 was fair to good on upper channels, but so noisy on lower channels that channels 2 to 7 were unwatchable. The first thing I noticed when I popped in the new HVR-950Q was a dramatic improvement in picture quality on the lower analog channels and some improvement too in upper channels. Obviously the HVR-950Q has much better noise filtering than the old HVR-950. The quality improvement in analog channels alone is reason enough to upgrade. Temperature A little worrying about the HVR-950Q is that the silicon inside must run pretty hot. The best way to judge this is to feel the metal ring of the cable. This tuner is powered from the computer USB port. Judging from its heat output this tuner must take...

Great with Media Center...
This is my second tuner and far exceeds the 'average' tuner I purchased at a local electronics store. Hauppauge provided excellent customer service helping me decide which tuner was best for my computer and my needs. I have a new HP system running Vista 64-bit and wanted a tuner to run with the Media Center already installed. It did not come with a TV tuner. The HVR-1950 model 1192 comes with an external MPEG-2 encoder which doesn't draw resources from the computer. Great for watching TV while working in other programs simultaniously. It also comes with it's own viewing program (WinTV V6) which I find relatively user friendly but I prefer to use Media Center for TV viewiewing, recording, and scheduling. The USB connection makes installation easy. Setup in Media Center was simple and picture quality and sound is as good as fatory installed Hauppauge tuners. The package also comes with an FM radio antenna, remote control, and IR Blaster to control channel changing on cable or...

Watch Analog, Cable and Digital TV on your PC
The WinTV HVR-1950 Tuner/Video Recorder lets you watch NTSC analog cable, over the air TV, ATSC digital over the air HDTV, and Clear QAM Digital Cable TV directly on your computer, either in a window or on full screen. Why miss your favorite sitcom or the deciding playoff game just because you have work to do?

This unique tuner supports NTSC analog cable, over the air TV, ATSC Digital over the air HDTV, and Clear QAM digital cable TV. NTSC is the analog cable TV standard, and ATSC is the over-the-air digital HDTV standard for North America and typically requires an antenna for reception. Clear QAM digital cable allows you to watch unencrypted HDTV stations from your cable TV provider without a set-top box.

The tuner also features a built-in 125 channel cable-ready TV tuner, allowing you to watch Analog TV and Clear QAM Digital TV by connecting to your cable box. For analog cable TV reception, you need an analog cable TV connection. If you have a digital cable set-top box or a satellite box, the WinTV-HVR-1950 can connect via either Composite or S-Video inputs. For ATSC over-the-air digital TV reception, a high-gain antenna is recommended. (To check the ATSC TV broadcasts in your area, go to TitanTV.com and enter your postal code. Note: depending on the strength of your antenna, you might not be able to receive all broadcasts listed at TitanTV.)

Schedule and Record your Favorite Show
With the on-board MPEG-2 encoder, which allows your PC to run at full speed while recording, the WinTV-HVR-1950 lets you record analog cable TV while allowing your PC to operate at full speed while recording, so you won't sacrifice any performance.

Digital TV programs are recorded in their original video quality, so 1080i programs are recorded at 1080i, and so on. With WinTV-Scheduler software installed, you can also turn your PC into a virtual PVR and schedule and record your TV shows automatically.

Analog TV recordings typically consume 1.5 GB of disk space per hour using Hauppauge's SoftPVR for Windows XP and Media Center. High-definition TV recordings typically consume 5 GB of disk space per hour.

Other features include a Dolby-TV stereo decoder for Dolby-quality audio, and a remote control that lets you control satellite and TV set top boxes for the ultimate in convenience. The WinTV-HVR-1950 is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Media Center.

Great product, bad users!
I've read a lot of the reviews on this product with the majority of them bad mouthing it. I really like this product and I'll tell you why, but before I do, I'll give you some information on myself: 20 y/o male, currently residing in Greenbelt, MD right on the border of D.C., somewhat tech savvy running Vista Ultimate-32bit and use plain old rabbit ears from an old (and I mean an OLD tv). Installion was a breeze, as easy as 1-2-3. You connect everything to HVR-1950, plug in your USB cable and vista does the majority of the work for you. The tuner comes with a driver/program cd that Vista will ask you to pop in after not being able to find the drivers online. At this point you can pop in the disk or go to the support site and download the latest version of the driver (which you should have done before hand anyway). Once its installed you can setup Media center or Wintv. I like media better so I can't say anything for Wintv because I haven't used it. Media center TV setup...
