The New Terrarium
The New TerrariumWhat do you picture when talking about a terrarium? Do you have the memory I do of my summer vacations? We summered up at Green Lake for many years. Dad would cut firewood in the woods behind the cottage. Mother would walk back with us kids so we could explore the woods. She gathered moss, decayed wood, a few pine cones, and the tiny British Soldier fungi we found on downed logs. These were carefully protected on our trips home. Then, she'd carefully arrange these treasures in a brandy sniffer terrarium. It served as a vacation reminder until the next summer. This childhood memory left me with a permanent yearning for a terrarium. Unfortunately, I didn't seem to acquire the knack of putting these together successfully. I've...

Product Description

If you live in the city but want to be close to nature . . .
If you call the countryside home but have no time to step outside . . .
If you are confined to an office fifty hours a week . . .
If your home needs the soothing touch of the natural world . . .

In The New Terrarium, Tovah Martin, one of America’s favorite gardeners, introduces you to the whimsical yet practical world of gardens under glass—a no-fuss way to bring snippets of nature indoors. Wherever you are, in whatever little time you have, terrariums are the perfect tool for nature lovers and gardeners everywhere.

With gorgeous photography, The New Terrarium reveals how this classic garden tool has been reimagined in a modern way. When encased in glass, plants thrive with almost no help from outside their little enclosed world, so you can host a plant almost anywhere—in your apartment where the air is dry or in your cubicle where there’s little natural light. Tucked inside something crystal and contained, the bounty of the forest or treasures from the beach or the meadow can merge seamlessly into your home or office environment. It’s amazing how some frothy fern fronds or colorful blossoms can transform a room by giving it a burst of vibrant green life.

With clear, simple step-by-step instructions and photographs to inspire and guide you along the way, Martin shares her years of experience growing and tending terrariums and shows how terrariums can enrich your life, including:

• different venues for cultivating your terrarium
• plants that flourish in these gardens under glass
• ideas and designs for creating your first terrarium
• how to care for and maintain the environment you’ve made

Martin has designed a unique range of imaginative terrarium projects, including ones that are suitable for children, enliven the seasons, incorporate plant propagation, and show off a nature collection. Whether you are a gardener or city-dwelling nature lover, The New Terrarium is the perfect way to spark your creativity, while helping you to bring your favorite plants into your home and giving them a place to thrive.

When nature is out of arm’s reach and you crave a little greenery, The New Terrarium can show you how to bring all the benefits of the outdoors close to you. Top to learn more

Useful and beautiful
I checked this new book out from my library to see if I wanted to buy it later on down the road, and I do! The book is beautifully photographed, and it contains very useful information. When I am ready to to start making my terrariums, I will purchase the book. I particularly like the section on appropriate plants-this way I won't have to go to the nursery and wander around like a dumb-dumb! Terrariums are the new hot thing in crafting...so I plan to get started soon.

Beauty from Found Materials
My love for terrariums goes back to the 1970s when those large, spaceship-style plastic orbs were so popular. Terrarium Craft by Amy Bryant Aiello and Kate Bryant is a wonderful book that has inspired me to bring some updated terrariums back into my home. What I liked most about the book is that that the authors' creations are from found materials. Instead of expensive Wardian cases, this book shows how to create beautiful scenes from a variety of glass objects you may have around the house or something you will be able to pick up at a thrift store. The authors provide good instructions for choosing containers and the proper planting materials to provide for a healthy environment for added plants. There are many pages of inspiration for natural and unique materials to add beauty and charm to the desired scene. Plants and mosses are also explained. There are full-page sized photographs of most of the designs.I especially appreciate the photographs...

Terrariums are a vibrant, unique way to inject a little greenery into any home. can't wait to buy me some moss
ooh i get to write the first review. i just stumbled into the world of terraring and was looking for a book to learn the basics and get some inspiration. from the cover it seemed like Tiny World was geared towards the kind i had in mind - ones that incorporate figures to make fun, scenic worlds - and it is. i think this book did a great job of explaining how to create terrariums in a direct step-by-step manner and now feel equipped to give terraring a try. the second half of the book is filled with photos of the many beautiful terrariums the authors have created (although they are kind of similar...), and each one comes with details about what was used so the reader can replicate them. the book is geared towards beginners, but could offer inspiration to anyone.

Lots of Good Pictures
This is a great little book for those who like to build terrariums with miniature figures in them. There are lots of pictures and how to steps. I wasn't expecting a book completely dedicated to "scenes" in jars/terrariums as this isn't my thing.....but this is a lovely book for those who do.

Best that I've ever found.
I'll be brief: I recently bought and read this book because I am building a new, elaborate terrarium. As a reference, this book is the best I've ever encountered. As a read-able book, it's also top notch. You would not think that moss could be interesting, but this book makes it so. Don't waste your money on books by Bartlett or Walls (anyone who reads herp books will know those guys know their stuff, but not like this!). If you're going to buy a terrarium book (discusses deserts, jungles, watery environs, etc. from beginner level to VERY advanced tricks and tactics), make this the one!!! You will NOT be disappointed.

I couldn't be more pleased! This are exquisite!
I purchased several beautiful glass terrariums and also some small air plants, added a little beach sand and some colored stones and have my own private mini-oasis, one by my work desk, one in my kitchen window, one for my Mom. These are just perfect and the seller went over and above in providing service. I would HIGHLY recommend the seller and the product.

Very neat
I really like this little hanging plant terrarium. I bought four of them, one for myself and the other 3 for gifts. Already made mine and put it by my kitchen window, it looks really neat hanging down from the ceiling - makes me smile every time I look at it :-) Highly recommend it, makes a nice and unusual gift, too.

Amazing
I did not order this terrarium from Amazon.com but I do own this specific one and I love it! PROS: My pacman frog has called this terrarium home for about 2 years now. It is very beautiful and alluring. The terrarium is made very well and the glass doors are very convenient. Decorating the terrarium is actually kind of fun. At first I thought it would be a pain but you can make it look however you want and there are a lot of possibilities. My friends are always checking on my frog and what I have done with his tank this week. It looks more expensive than it is. Live plants make great decorations and add to the fun!! The terrarium holds heat well and is elevated so you can put a heater under it. This Terrarium is semi child proof as the doors lock and most people can't figure out how to open it LOL. CONS: The top screen has places for you to put cords through such as a fogger or water pump. The only problem I have had is that if you feed your pet crickets they...

The extra-high fixed front window is ideal for thick layers of substrates (burrowing reptiles), aquatic parts or to mount an Exo Terra reptile den. The Exo Terra Rock Terrarium Background, which comes with the Exo Terra Glass Terrarium, is an easy-to-cut background with an incredible natural look. It creates a multi-dimensional habitat ideal for climbing reptiles or can be simply used to beautify the natural terrarium. Its color and texture, like all Exo Terra natural terrarium decorations, create a perfectly harmonized environment, humid or dry. in good shape but not what I thought I was getting
This is a great and high quality terrarium. I would advise the seller to put the dimensions on the listing. I honestly thought i was getting a larger size. I felt the listing was misleading, and this terrarium is too small for what I need it for, however, it is too big and heavy for me to to afford to ship it back. It just wouldn't be worth it. So I'll still have to get a larger terrarium and just eat the cost of this one. The product's nice, but its not what I wanted or thought I was getting.

Terrariums

“It is a good idea to do some research on the type of terrarium you want to create and how best to create the eco-system so that it comes self-sufficient,” recommends Sara. People have been creating terrariums for years, typically in square glass containers the size of small aquariums. Traditional terrariums have a lid, so that you can trap the humidity needed for tropical plants to survive. However for more tropical plants, you want to create a layered effect, with pebbles or decorative rocks on the bottom, a layer of charcoal and then potting soil. “Terrariums have always been in style, but with the playful nature of combining vintage items in a contemporary setting, their popularity seems higher than ever,” says Sara Jameson, owner of Sweetpea’s , a flower shop in Toronto.

I have three moss terrariums (all open) and I have been watering for a few weeks with tap water. However, will the moss that is already slightly brown bounce back from the damage once I start watering with rainwater/distilled, or should I harvest new moss. The moss kept getting progressively browner because my tap water is apparently moderately ‘hard.
