Windows XP is stable, won't crash is great for plug & play
If you're reading this. You're thinking of buying Windows XP home edition here are a few things to keep in mind. First thing is, you might be able to get away with buying just the upgrade edition. The upgrade edition allows you to do a full install. It just asks you for the CD of a previous version of Windows. Also remember you can download service pack two from the Windows update web site. So no need to buy it integrated with XP. These are what I consider the minimum system requirements: 256 MB of RAM. I have found is adequate more equals better. 500 MHz or higher will do. 7200 rpm hard drive will help a lot. If you're running Windows millennium edition, or 98 upgrade now the stability is vastly improved. Gone are the blue screens of death. Frequently asked question: is Windows XP Pro better than home edition? Windows XP Pro has a more high-end networking features that most home users...

Apple's Boot Camp and Windows XP
I took the plunge and downloaded Apple's Boot Camp for the Intel based Macintosh. I had some old PC games so I thought this was worth giving a try. Apple's setup process was seamless for partioning a seperate drive I installed just for Windows XP. Then you get to the Windoze part of installation with the famous blue screen. It does look antiquated, but I followed Boot Camp's instructions to install. Windows XP took about 90 minutes via the "standard" insall method. Apple's OS X as I remember installed in about 10-20 minutes! Since my installation about four months ago, Windows XP has been running just fine. I have actually gone onto getting additional PC games of my Windows XP disk. So this is great for those who want to have a Mac OS X side for work and a Windows XP side for play. Plus it looks like there won't be many games available in the future for OS X. Apple's latest version of Boot Camp includes Windows Vista support, however I think I will...

Good Software
This is great for Mac users who want to add Windows to their computers. Please note that you will also need to either download Apple's "Bootcamp" software, or purchase Parallel software (which Amazon also sells) and install it before installing the Windows XP software. It's worth the money.

Windows XP Home makes it easy to use your Computer for those Personal projects you enjoy. Service Packs round up the bug fixes and product updates you need for operating more smoothly. This Service Pack bridges the gaps between the original software and user requests more fully, responding to customer wishes and making XP even better. Top to learn more

With Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2, you get safer browsing and communication, powerful security tools, and improved experiences. Packed with multimedia features, Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 aims to unlock the full potential of your personal computer. It also looks great, with rounded window corners, larger and more detailed icons, and a clean-look desktop.

The Security Center lets you check the status of your essential security settings.

The best thing about Windows XP is that, because it belongs to the Windows NT/2000 product family, it's designed from the ground up for reliability, security, and networking. XP Home users will soon see the benefits of this. The dreaded Windows crash-and-reboot cycle really is much less common with XP, and, provided the hardware is up to scratch, XP's performance is better, too. The downside is that using a different code base can make compatibility with old applications less assured. Business applications normally run fine, but older games, MIDI software, and system utilities may well cause problems.

Windows XP is more customizable than previous versions, including its visual themes that let you change the whole appearance of Windows in an instant. Fast User Switching is a neat feature for computers used by more than one person--it lets another user log on without killing the previous user's session, and when you switch back, running applications and open documents are as you left them. This is impressive, but what really counts is that XP understands how to deal with multiple users. Each user has their own special folders, such as My Documents, which cannot be seen by other users. And for those with more than one computer, the network setup wizard simplifies setting up a network.

Windows XP Home has many strong multimedia features. New Media Player lets you copy music from CD to hard disk, create your own playlist, and write your own music CDs if you have a CD writer. You can also play back DVD-Video (but only if a hardware or software DVD decoder is already installed) and play MP3 audio files and MPEG videos (but sadly not the popular RealMedia formats). Admittedly, Media Player does nothing that you cannot also do with free alternatives, but it is slick and nicely integrated. There is also Windows Movie Maker, a basic tool for capturing and editing videos that's fun to use, although too limited for serious work.

The Information Bar in Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 notifies you when it blocks ActiveX control or active content and then lets you decide what to do.

For Web browsing, XP Home comes with Internet Explorer 6.0 and MSN Explorer. The most significant new feature for Internet users is the built-in firewall. A firewall protects against one of the most disturbing security risks, in which other users unknown to you might connect to your computer while it is online, reading private files or causing other damage. XP's built-in firewall is a simple affair, but it does prevent most types of unauthorized connections.

Service Pack 2 allows users to instruct Internet Explorer how to handle downloads from a specific publisher

The XP user interface is not a radical departure from earlier versions of Windows, but there are a number of small changes that together add up to a significant improvement. For example, you can add and remove shortcuts from the Start menu by right-clicking on the icon and selecting Pin or Unpin from the pop-up menu. Windows online help is integrated into a Help and Support Center that works like an internal Web site, with searchable help, tutorials, and walkthroughs. Laptop or other flat-screen users can set Windows to use ClearType for screen fonts, for a more readable display.

There are, of course, some pitfalls. Windows XP Home is demanding on hardware, and it would be a mistake to install it on less than Microsoft's recommended minimum. Business users note: unlike Windows 98 or Me, XP Home Edition cannot join a Windows server domain, so the networking is peer-to-peer only--see Windows XP Professional Edition for this functionality. There is also no multiprocessor support, and a mildly annoying anti-piracy measure requires you to obtain a code from Microsoft for full installation and any future system changes. But don't let that put you off: this is Microsoft's best Windows yet.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Features

Internet Explorer Pop-up Blocker Makes browsing the Internet more enjoyable by enabling you to reduce unwanted ads and content.
Internet Explorer download monitoring Warns you about potentially harmful downloads and gives you the option to block files that could be malicious.
Internet Explorer Information Bar Provides better information about events that are happening as you browse the Web, so it’s easier to know what’s going on and address potential security issues.
Windows Security Center Allows you to easily view your security status and manage key security settings in one convenient place.
Windows Firewall update Automatically turned on by default, this improved firewall helps protect Windows XP from viruses, worms, and other security threats that can spread over the Internet.
Improved wireless support Dramatically improves and simplifies the process of discovering and connecting to wireless networks.
Bluetooth technologies Enables you to easily connect to the latest Bluetooth-enabled hardware devices such as keyboards, cell phones, and PDAs.
Windows Media Player 9 Series Makes it easy to enjoy music, video, and broadband content with enhanced security.

Save yourself, and buy this book.
In reviewing David Pogue's latest iteration of The Missing Manual series for Windows XP Home Edition you have to keep in mind it's the Home Edition, in other words it's for the vast majority of us plodders who don't know squat about the amazing depth of functionality of Microsoft's new operating system. It is a marvelous book that I rate as a definite "Just Shut Up and Buy It". Your personal computer experience will take a change for the better. My personal digital experience didn't ask the question, "Where do you want to go today?" but rather, "just how deep do I really want to get in to this mess today?" David Pogue's book will answer the second question so you can ask the first one with a straight face. Then you can proudly button up your properly configured and operating computer, and go get a life. If we gave a quiz to a random sample of 1000 XP Home Edition users, how many would know off the top of their heads, for example, how to add ® for a trademark or © for a...

Good for the new to intermediate user
David Pogue writes in a clear, relaxed style with the kind of humor that makes reading a Windows XP book enjoyable. There are many screenshots and well written instructions on what to do and why you are doing it. Windows XP Home Edition: The Missing Manual is a hands on book but can be read when you're not in front of your computer. Topics cover the standard things like setup, how to get around the new interface, included applets and networking. If you've used a computer before and chances are good you have if you're reading this review then you'll be comfortable with the technical level and explainations in the book. Intermediate users will enjoy being able to look up areas of interest and actually there are some great tips on how to work with Windows XP Home Edition. Advanced users will want more and this is not the complete comprehensive text. That said it is one of the best.XP was a big change from earlier consumer versions of Windows and users will pick up quite a bit of...

David Pogue does Windows
It is probably fair to say that author David Pogue "does Windows" as well as anyone. Not in designing the operating system, of course, but in explaining how to use it. Pogue has written "Windows XP Home Edition: The Missing Manual, 2nd Ed.", which is an update of the original 2002 Edition. Although he is long associated with writing about the Apple Macintosh operating system and applications, here he demonstrates his knowledge of the Windows XP system as well. The book covers the latest version of XP Home, including the Service Pack 2 update. Pogue is currently a computer columnist for the NY Times and the author of 35 books, most notably many in the "Missing Manual" series published by Pogue Press/O'Reilly Media, Inc. With that series, Pogue has created a "template " for explaining operating systems and applications for non-technical users of all levels which almost cannot be improved upon. He describes and explains technical material in a straight-forward...

With its wealth of tips, instructions, and expert advice, this comprehensive resource is your ticket to making your time at the computer safer, easier, and more fun. And best of all, it's been updated to include detailed coverage of Service Pack 2.

I can't believe I detailed without this thing!!!!
This what I am going to call an orbital buffer is fantastic. I can't believe I detailed without this thing before. I got this for detail in my body shop for exterior details and am very happy with the performance. Gone are the swirl marks from inexperience using buffers. Normally when setting up an entry detailer I could not trust them with a buffer for some time in fears of swirl marks and burn through on the customers paint but not with this thing. It does vibrate something ferociously when at high speeds but its an orbital and is to be expected. It will never replace an actual buffer for the purpose of getting rid of serious scratches but light scratches are nothing for this tool. In fact if you listen closely you can hear it laughing at them. LOL Just kidding. + Very very easy to use Variable speed Easy to hold on to Eliminates swirls - Kind of loud Doesnt come with adapter plate Using it for a long...

Excellent machine
This machine is absolutely brilliant. I have used the older 7424 and I thought THAT was great. However, the new machine with its larger switch and more power make a great machine even better. I used this to bring 4 cars headlights back to optical clarity. You know what I am talking about: the yellow oxidization and weird film that doesn't seem to come off your headlights no matter how many times you scrub and wash. After a good wetsanding, this polisher brought back the clarity and smoothness of the headlights. I highly recommend this machine for anyone who needs to repair their oxidized paint or headlights. It's actually known for it's swirl and paint correction abilities, so you should definitely invest in this thing.

Nice dependable polisher
The 7424XP is a nice, well built polisher with enough power for all but the toughest polishing jobs. I have only two complaints. First, the item is described by several vendors as a dual-action/circular polisher. It is not and will not operate as a circular polisher, much to my dismay as circular action is what I was needing when I ordered it. But, it does what it does so well that I decided to keep it. The second complaint is that it doesn't come with a Hook & Loop backing pad and this is why I rated it 3 out of 5 stars. These pads are available at a reasonable cost, but considering how popular Hook & Loop is I would have expected one be included. Since Amazon showed other people also ordered Meguiar pads with this polisher I didn't think I would need to separately order a Hook & Loop backing pad. So, if you order this polisher be prepared to also chase down a Hook & Loop backing pad for it if you expect to use the Meguiar pads.

Charging times using the Motorola SPN5504 Battery Charger
For those interested... The output rating of the Motorola SPN5504 Battery Charger (as of April 2011, no longer directly stocked by Motorola) is 850 MA (milliamperes) at 5.1 volts. The lithium-ion battery within the Motorola Droid 2 Global cellphone, Type BP6X, is rated at 1420 mAH (milliampere-hours, typical). So, if you were to use the cellphone, discharging it down to the 5 percent level (as indicated on the "Battery Management" screen of the cellphone), the time it would take to recharge the phone to 100 percent (fully charged state) would nominally be 95 minutes, calculated as follows: Recharge time = (Percent_discharged x Battery_capacity) / battery_charger rate, i.e., (0.95 x 1420) / 850 = 1.587 hours or 95 minutes. Similarly, charging rates for given percent battery discharges are: 90% - 90 minutes 80% - 80 minutes 70% - 70 minutes 60% - 60 minutes 50% - 50 minutes The above are "nominal"...

Genuine Motorola Charger - Real Quality Power
This is an excellent USB charger, which delivers up to 950mAh power to your sensitive devices (In my case, a Motorola Droid 2). I have searched around the internet and have found a lot of issues people are experiencing with cheap chargers, especially newer smartphones. There are mixed results, but it seems that a "quality" charger is the safe way to go, as the generic chargers (including the cell phone company branded ones) can deliver "dirty" power. By dirty I mean it isn't a continuous flow of amps, with spikes or harmonic distortions. On most phones that have been made, this isn't a problem because the power is just filling the battery. But, with newer devices, they may experience malfunctions, and even damage/destroy your phone! I was prompted to buy another one of these chargers because my OEM one that came with the phone was used in my bedroom, and I was using a generic USB charger in the living room which was giving me difficulty. Whenever I plugged my phone into...

Awesome Deal for OEM Droid Charger
I purchased these from Bargain Cell for my Droid X. They are identical in every way including output ratings of 5.1v === 850mA. The part number for the cable is SKN5004A while the charger's is SPN5504A. These are exactly the same as what came in my Droid X box. As any Droid X owner knows, the Droid X gulps battery power and you can't have enough chargers. I also happen to have a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) case for my DX. Unfortunately, the thicker cable ports on my long micro USB cables do not insert flush inside the micro USB port of my DX. However, the Motorola OEM cable ends are very thin and therefore plug in more easily and stay plugged in. This is why I only sought out chargers and cables that were Motorola OEM. Keep in mind that the cable is short. This works well when charging from a counter top location but terrible if you're running the charger from the ground to the top of a desk. In that case, you can always use...

Senco Framepro 701XP a Great Tool
I general contracted my own house build about three years ago. I noticed back in 2003 that my framing crew exclusively used the Senco framing nailers. In January of 2006 I decided to start finishing my basement (on my own this time) but I needed a framing nailer. I called "Jay" my original house framer to get a recommendation on framing nailers. He said that all he will ever use are Senco nailers. He has been using them for years and they are very reliable. He specifically mentioned the 701XP as the nailer his crew preferred. I went with his recommendation and am very pleased with it. I just finished two rooms in the basement, going through probably 1000 nails in the process...not a single jam. The Senco has "teeth" on the tip which make it easier to toe nail with than some of the other nailers. It is very powerful and has no problems burying a 3 inch nail perfectly at 90 pounds of air pressure. I've never bought a framing nailer before so I don't have much to compare it...

Senco's
I am a construction contractor and have been for over 20 years. Senco has been my choice of air tools for most of that time. If you want quality and dependability, go with Senco. Just watch your air pressure, though. I've noticed that excessive air tends to blow the seals.

Nice tool.
I am just a DYI person. I have rented and borrowed framing nailers several times over the past few years and knowing I had a couple of big projects coming up, I knew it was time to buy my own. This thing has performed flawlessly. A couple of downsides. I had to buy my own adapter and connector as this didn't come with one. Kind of a pain particulary because they are so cheap and could just be included. Second, the depth adjustment is a bit of a hassle, although once I got my compressor set right and the nailer set right I didn't have to make any adjustments throught 2000 nails. Last, I bought the hard case from Amazon. It's a shame it doesn't come with one.

You can use an older, smaller hard drive as the backup device, as long as the backup drive has more “Free Space” than the main hard drive has “Used Space”. Windows XP Home Edition doesn’t install the Backup utility by default. In the “Backup Utility” dialog box, select the “Backup” tab and set the checkbox next to the drive to backup (c:) and set the checkbox next to “System State”. The end connector should go to your main hard drive, the middle connector can be used for a backup hard drive. When you restart your computer, the second drive should be automatically recognized and be designated with the next drive letter available, usually E: (D: being used for the CD-ROM drive). The second hard drive doesn’t have to be equal to your main hard drive. To perform a backup, select Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Backup to open the Backup Utility. In the “Backup media or file name” text box, enter the path to the file for the backup (example E:\Backup. When installing a second hard drive in your computer, it’s important to configure the drives correctly. Generally, you will want to re-format the second hard drive after installation to remove any previously installed operating system and to remove any previous file access rights. You might choose a tape drive or a DVD drive, but those devices might require drivers to be installed before you could restore from them. In the “Add or Remove Programs” utility”, click on the “Add New Programs” button, then click on the “CD or Floppy” button. You’ll need to install it manually from your Windows XP CD-ROM.

The Win 7 and Vista can talk to each other and both see the XP Home laptop (the XP Home laptop displays in the Network window), but neither can access the XP, and the XP cannot see the Vista or Win7 laptop. Could it be that the XP Home is such a legacy OS that cannot be integrated into a Home network/Workgroup.
