Fantastic Novel
This novel takes you through the search for a long lost parent, but the true merit of the book is the raw and vivid picture it paints of a unique life and a special culture. The writing is such that one cannot help but imagine themselves as an onlooker peering through the window of the hacienda and watching the story unfold. The book doesnt just make the reader wonder who protagonist's father is, but makes them look introspectively and wonder what in their own lives they should be searching for, and for that alone, it is worth a read.

xtabentum
I loved this book. Interest is piqued from the very first page & you are drawn into the search from the outset. I love the intertwining historical accounts from the region of Merida. The title word was unknown to me, I thoroughly enjoyed the explanation and lacing of Xtabentum throughout the chapters. It left me wanting to learn more about this family - and more about the rich history/legend/and culture of Mexico. More please.

An absorbing and fascinating read
I often find it fascinating to read a first book that has been written by its author. It is usually the result of so many years of thoughts and ideas that have transpired over ones lifetime. In Rosy and Carl Hugener's first novel, Xtabentum: A Novel of Yucatan, they have shown me how true this is.The story is both fascinating and absorbing. While I learned about actual historical figures and events, the story captivated me right from the start with the mystery of "the set of keys" and how the discovery of their father's birth certificate would lead to a quest to uncover the truth of decades earlier in the lives of this family. The character development in this novel is outstanding. I immediately grew to love many of the characters in the book. As the story weaved through the decades, the characters too developed with time.I found Xtabentum: A Novel of Yucatan to be an absorbing read. I would highly recommend it to those readers who enjoy...

Product Description
According to Mayan legend, the Xtabentum flower that grows wild on the Yucatan peninsula first appeared on the grave of a free-spirited young woman who was scorned for her passion by the people of her village, but loved by the gods for her kind heart.
Xtabentum: A Novel of Yucatan is a story of two young women set in the years following the Mexican Revolution in Merida, Yucatan, one of the wealthiest cities in the world at the time. Amanda Diaz is from the "divine caste," a small group of families of European descent who dominate the politics and economy of the region. Amanda's lifelong friend, Carmen, is from the opposite end of the social spectrum, a Mayan Indian who is the daughter of one of the Diaz family servants. Against the true historical background of rebellion and assassination in the unstable country, the whipping of Carmen by a Diaz neighbor exposes the sheltered existence of the two women and drives them apart.
The story follows Amanda through her horror at the social injustice of the two-class Mexico to the sacrifices she makes in the name of friendship. Parts of the story take place in modern times, where the discovery of an old birth certificate sets Amanda's granddaughter in search of a secret about her father's birth. Her search, told in the first person, is blended with a third-person account of the lives of Amanda and her contemporaries in the 1920s. Top to learn more
